Penerapan Teknik Murder untuk Meningkatkan Motivasi membaca Siswa pada mata pelajaran bahasa Inggris di SMP Negeri 11 Yogyakarta

Subyek penelitian sebagai sumber data pada penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 11 Yogyakarta. Peneliti mengambil kelas VIIb sebagai kelas eksperimen yang berjumlah 32 siswa. Sedangkan sebagai kelas kontrol yaitu kelas VIIc yang berjumlah 33 siswa. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah quasi eksperimen karena pengambilan sampel tidak dilakukan secara acak. Pada penelitian ini, data dikumpulkan dengan melakukan observasi dan memberikan kuesioner sebagai kepada subyek penelitian. Kuesioner yang digunakan diadopsi dari Kuesioner Motivasi Membaca yang dikembangkan oleh Wigfield dan Guthrie (1997) dan Baker dan Wigfield (1999) yang terdiri dari: Competence and Reading Efficacy, Achievement Values and Goals, Social Aspects of Reading and 11 dimensions of reading motivation which are (1) Reading efficacy, (2) Reading Challenge, (3) Reading Work Avoidance, (4) Reading Curiosity, (5) Reading Involvement, (6) Importance of Reading, (7) Competition in Reading, (8) Reading Recognition, (9) Reading for Grades, (10) Social Reasons for Reading and (11) Reading Compliance. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan teknik MURDER dalam pengajaran keterampilan membaca secara umum dapat meningkatkan motivasi membaca siswa khususnya pada aspek atau dimensi Efficacy, Challenge, Curiosity, Involvement, Recognition, Grades dan Social. Terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan yang ditunjukkan oleh hasil uji beda delta nilai mean antara kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol.
The objectives of this research are to examine and to analyze whether MURDER technique can increase the dimensions of motivational reading. The study participants were all students of class VII B of 32 people as a class of experiments that were treated using the MURDER technique. As for the control of the entire class of students Class VII C, it amounted to 33 people. The participants of the research was all students in grade VIIb and VIIc SMP Negeri 11 Yogyakarta. Thirty two students ( 16 boys and 16 girls) in class VIIb as experimental group and thirty three students ( 15 boys and 18 girls) as control group. Quasy experimental research was used in this research because the researcher has limited leverage and control over the selection of study participants. Another reason is that researcher was not able to take subjects at random and cannot believe that homogeneous samples can be taken as desired. The data collection technique is to provide the questionnaires and observations before pretest. The research instrument used in this study were students' reading motivation instrument adopted from Reading Motivation Quesionnaire developed by Wigfield and Guthrie (1997) and Baker and Wigfield (1999), which includes three categories: Competence and Reading Efficacy, Achievement Values and Goals, Social Aspects of Reading and 11 dimensions of reading motivation which are (1) Reading efficacy, (2) Reading Challenge, (3) Reading Work Avoidance, (4) Reading Curiosity, (5) Reading Involvement, (6) Importance of Reading, (7) Compotition in Reading, (8) Reading Recognition, (9) Reading for Grades, (10) Social Reasons for Reading and (11) Reading Compliance. Data were analyzed using SPPS 17.0. Results of data analysis conducted by researcher showed that a significant increase on the posttest with the application of MURDER for the seven aspects or dimensions of reading motivation in a questionnaire (Quesionnaire Reading Motivation) the efficacy, challenge, curiosity, involvement, recognition, and social grades.
