MICRO SIMULATION OF PELICAN CROSSING AT SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS (Case Study: Gejayan and Sagan Intersections, Sleman, Yogyakarta)

The condition of the existing of pedestrian crossing at Gejayan and Sagan is the unavailability of special signals for the pedestrians. Therefore, the author proposes a simulation on pelican crossing. The main reason of using simulation is that there is no pelican crossing in the street mentioned. In this case, the simulation used is a micro simulation of Aimsun. The aims of this research are to find out the effectiveness of each scenario in term of intersection performance (delay time either on section or on system); Pedestrian Level of Service (LOS) (pedestrian delay or waiting time); accident risk of pedestrian; and the best scenario based on intersection performance, pedestrian LOS, and accident risk of pedestrian. The data needed in this research are traffic flow, speed, traffic time signal, queue length, and pedestrian flow. All of these data are used to build a model that can represent the existing condition. The data used to calibrate and validate the model are queue length and speed respectively. After the calibration and validation are statistically significant to represent the existing condition, some scenarios related to pelican crossing are proposed, and each scenario is evaluated in term of intersection performance, pedestrian LOS, and accident risk of pedestrian to get the best scenario. The result of this research shows that the best scenario applied at Gejayan and Sagan intersections is the third scenario. This scenario can fulfill pedestrian LOS D (pedestrian delay is 30-40 seconds), reduce 40% of accident risk of pedestrian and have the lowest delay either on section or on system (252 seconds) among other scenarios.
