This research aims at identifying and analysing the possible effects of the slot time coordinated airport’s slot time allocation system on the airline competition. The slot allocation systems which this thesis discusses are those that are applied at the London Heathrow airport located in United Kingdom and the Soekarno-Hatta airport located in Indonesia. This research provides the opportunity to compare the effects of two different slot allocation systems in United Kingdom and Indonesia. Qualitative interviews about this slot time issue, correspondence with the stakeholder, formal press release, reports and guidelines are the data that will be used for this research. The thesis first introduces the concept and airports classification, thus explaining the needs of an independent slot coordinator in the slot allocation system for slot coordinated airport. Later, the thesis will explain the application of this regulation of slot allocation system formulated by IATA on two different countries, the United Kingdom and Indonesia. The current conditions and problems involving the systems of both countries will also be defined and explained. The discussions to analyse and assess the relationship of currents conditions with the transaction costs that might be involved will be carried out in the last chapters of this thesis. The effects of these conditions to the airline competition will also be analysed in this thesis’s part. Moreover, in the last part of the discussions, some recommendations will be proposed for the improvements of the current systems in both countries separately. Finally this thesis concludes that the slot allocation system can affect the airline competition in both countries. The government controlled Indonesian system and the heavily privatised UK system; both share their own advantages and weakness. Both are however, may also share some common problems especially in regards of neutrality issues. The overall conditions and system seems to affect the general perceive of the airlines in both countries about transaction cost and slot allocation system. Based on the conclusions and research experiences, some recommendations are made for future research and study in this theme.
