PEMIKIRAN JOHN LOUIS ESPOSITO TENTANG PROBLEM DAN DIALOG PERADABAN ISLAM-BARAT (Tinjauan Sejarah Intelektual)

Dalam sejarahnya, tentang hubungan Islam dan Barat mengalami pasang surut yang berkepanjangan. Ketika dalam posisi ketegangan antara Islam-Barat, muncul ketidakadilan opini Barat dimana Islam selalu ditampilkan dengan objek negatif dan muka buram. Akan tetapi, muncul pembelaan dari seorang pakar dari kalangan Barat yakni John L. Esposito yang berada diluar arus Islam tetapi netral dan rasional. Dalam hal inilah penulis menyajikan penelitian atas pemikiran John L. Esposito dengan fokus hubungan Islam dan Barat mulai dari pasang surut, hingga titik temu teologis. Tiga persoalan mendasar yang diajukan adalah; Pertama, Bagaimana Pemikiran John L. Esposito tentang Sejarah Perjumpaan Islam dan Barat? Kedua, Apakah Problem Relasi Islam dan Barat dalam Pandangan John L. Esposito? ga, Bagaimana Pandangan Esposito tentang Masa Depan Dialog Antar Peradaban? Dalam Penelitian ini merupakan kajian pustaka (literature research) yang menggunakan sumber data baik primer berupa buku-buku-buku John L. Esposito maupun sekunder berupa tokoh-tokoh lain yang berbicara tentang hubungan Islam dan Barat. Sedangkan teknik pengolahan data menggunakan metode deskripsi, interpretasi dan analisis. Dari persoalan diatas di dapati bahwa; pertama, menurut Esposito, berdasarkan fakta sejarah, antara Islam dan Barat secara teologis mempunyai ikatan yang kuat yakni ada titik temu dan persamaan antara Islam dan Barat yang mewarisi tradisi Yahudi dan Kristen. Ketiga agama ini mewarisi tradisi Nabi Ibrahim. Namun, Persamaan teologis yang ada antar Kristen dan Islam justru menjadi penyebab benturan di antara keduanya. Kedua, problem historis antara islam dan barat dapat dilihat dari akar konflik yang meliputi, teologis dan politis konflik antara Islam dan Barat tertutupi dengan motif politik. Sebaliknya, teologis hanya dijadikan justifikasi untuk membedakan secara kultural dan teologis antara Islam dan Barat, pada dasarnya perbedaan ini lebih didorong oleh kepentingan politik. Ketiga, menurut Esposito, dalam upaya untuk membangun kesepakatan dan koalisi global, untuk secara aktif mempromosikan kerjasama. Oleh karena itu, Menurut Esposito bahwa yang terpenting saat ini perjumpaan Islam dan Barat harus dimaknai sebagai membangun dialog peradaban, bukan konfrontasi atau saling curiga, membangun hubungan yang ideal serta perlunya harmonisasi antara peradaban Islam dan Barat Pendekatan yang digunakan adalah pendekatan historis. Pendekatan historis di sini mengkaji problem historis hubungan Barat-Islam beserta pasang surut hubungan Barat-Islam dalam sejarah. Setelah melakukan penelitian, hasil temuan dalam penelitian ini bahwa Esposito adalah tokoh kritis menyuarakan pembelaannya terhadap Islam, keberpihakan Esposito terhadap Islam adalah keberpihakan yang rasional, yaitu menurut sejarah dan perkembangan politik yang selalu terjadi. Selain itu, Esposito melakukan upaya-upaya harmonisasi hubungan Barat-Islam melalui pemikiran dan karya-karyanya. Di sinilah letak kontribusi pemikiran Esposito dalam penelitian ini. Artinya, Esposito dapat melakukan upaya-upaya perbaikan (harmonisasi) melalui dialog peradaban, melakukan harmonisasi, tidak mempertentangkan melainkan adanya kerjasama Islam- Barat yang baik melalui penelusuran pemikiran Esposito tentang masa depan hubungan Islam-Barat, mulai dari problem hingga upaya harmonisasi, dialog peradaban, dan seterusnya.

In the history, the relationship between Islam and The West put address on the rise and fall in the sturdiness between Islam and west, there is injustice of West’s opinion where Islam is always showed with negative object. However, there is advocacy western expert, he is John L. Esposito which in the out of Islam line but neutral and rational. In the case, the writer studied about John L. Esposito’s consideration and the focus of research is the relationship between Islam and West by the rise and fall until found out of theology. The formulations of problems are: The first: How is the John L. Esposito’s consideration about history of Islam and West met? The second: what the point of view of Esposito about the relationship Islam and West ? The third: How is the point of view of John L. Esposito about in the dialogue future among civilization? The type of this research is literature research, which used premier research (John L. Esposito’s books), or secondary the experts of the relationship between Islam and west. The research method used descriptive method, interpretation, and analysis. From the problem in the above, the writer found: the first: according to John L. Esposito, that Islam image in the western world tend to be terrorism and fundamentalism. The image like that arose from negative opinions, which is made by experts and guiding to readers to believe Islam as a new menacing after the communism collapsed. The second: according to John L. Esposito, based on the fact of history, that there is strong relationship between Islam and The West theologically inherit Yahudi and Kristen culture. These three religions above inherit Ibrahim Prophet’s culture. The similarity of theology between Kristen and Islam become cause factor of conflict among them. An approach, which used, is histories approach and the theory, which is used, is conflict resolution theory. Here, histories approach is study about the problem in history of the relationship between Islam and west and the rise and fall in the relationship between west and Islam historically. The theory of resolution conflict, which is used, tries to solve the problems between Islam and West (harmonization) by the civilization dialogue in the future. After the research has done, the result of finding in the research that Esposito is critical person who his voice to defense to the Islam, Esposito’s voting to the Islam is rational voting. According to history and politic development that always be happen. Beside that, Esposito tries to harmonizes between west and Islam by his work and his consideration. That is the contribution of Esposito’s consideration in this research. It means, he can do efforts to harmonize by the civilization, harmonization, there is no one harmed between them but make a good corporation between Islam and The West from the research of Esposito’s consideration about the future of the relationship between Islam and west, begin from the problem to efforts of harmonization, the civilization dialogue, and etc.
