Physically handicapped people tended to have low self-esteems and this situation made them difficult to do a lot of things effectively. Their self-esteems needed to be improved and one way to achieve it was by changing their ways of thinking. Physically handicapped people had to change their less optimistic minds into ones of more optimistic especially regarding their self-abilities. Having optimistic way of thinking would be able to create more positive self-esteems. The purpose of this research was to test the role of optimistic way of thinking towards the improvement of physically handicapped people's self-esteems. The subjects of this research were physically handicapped people who underwent practices in Soeharso Rehabilitation Center, whose ages were between 21 till 30 years old, with educational backgrounds were junior high school in minimum, and having average level of optimistic and self-esteems. The design of this research was Case Study. Data were acquired from Self-esteem Scale, Optimistic Scale, observations during training sessions, interviews with the subjects, and self-monitoring reports. Intervention which was given to the subjects was Training for Optimistic Way of Thinking during five meetings with total amount of time of 480 minutes. Qualitative data analysis technique was using description. The result showed that optimistic way of thinking did not improve physically handicapped people's self-esteems effectively yet.
