Penelitian yang bertajuk “Revolusi Industri Inggris dan Semangat Romantisisme di London Seperti Tercermin dalam Puisi “London” dan “The Chimney Sweeper” karya William Blake: Tinjauan Sosiologi Sastra” ini bertujuan untuk mengungkapkan gambaran dan perubahan stuktur sosial masyarakat London sebagai dampak negatif Revolusi Industri seperti yang tercermin dalam puisi “London” dan “The Chimney Sweeper” karya William Blake, sekaligus mengungkapkan bagaimana Blake melalui kedua puisi tersebut menyuarakan semangat kebebasan manusia (human nature) yang menjadi jiwa jaman (spirit of the age) periode Romantisisme. Dalam penelitian ini, digunakan pendekatan Sosiologi sastra Janet Wolff yang dianggap mampu menganalisis dan mengungkap sejauh mana puisi “London” dan “The Chimney Sweeper” dapat merepresentasikan dan menggambarkan kondisi sosial masyarakat London ketika itu. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa lewat puisi “London” dan “The Chimney Sweeper” Blake ingin menggambarkan kondisi kehidupan sosial masyarakat London yang berubah akibat Revolusi Industri, diantaranya: (1) Kondisi kota London yang kotor dan kumuh diakibatkan banyaknya bangunan pabrik dan peningkatan jumlah penduduk karena urbanisasi; (2) Maraknya eksistensi buruh anak dan PSK; serta (3) tingkat kesejahteraan hidup masyarakat kelas bawah yang makin menurun sebagai akibat dari katidakadilan sosial yang terjadi. Hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa melalui kedua puisi tersebut, William Blake sebagai anggota masyarakat London mampu mewakili masyarakat London dalam menyuarakan semangat kebebasan manusia (human nature) yang sesungguhnya mencerminkan semangat jiwa jaman (spirit of the age) masa itu.

This research entitled “Industrial Revolution and Romanticism Spirit in London As Revealed in William Blake’s “London” and “The Chimney Sweeper”: A Study of Sociology of Literature” is aimed at revealing changes in social structure of the community in London as the undesirable impacts of the Industrial Revolution as seen in William Blake’s notable poems of “London” and “The Chimney Sweeper”. It is also intended to reveal how William Blake through those two poems expresses the spirit of human nature of freedom which is also the spirit of the age of Romanticism. This research applies the sociology of literature approach proposed of Janet Wolff which is considered appropriate in analyzing how the poems of “London” and “The Chimney Sweeper” could represent and describe the social condition of the Londoners at the time of Industrial Revolution. This research shows that through “London” and “The Chimney Sweeper” Blake wishes to reveal the community’s social life had changed due to the revolution. These aspects of community’s social life are (1) the sanitation of London is so poor and squalid because of factory buildings and the increase of population due to urbanization; (2) the existence of child labor and harlots; and (3) the social welfare level of poor people is continuously decreasing as the effects of social injustice. The research also reveals that through these two poems, William Blake as a part of London community is able to express the spirit of human nature of freedom which is in fact an expression of the spirit of the age.
