Tesis ini menganalisa permasalahan jihad yang mengandung konsepsi musuh dengan mengambil pemikiran Imam Samudra sebagai studi kasus. Masalah kekerasan atas nama agama mendapat perhatian besar ketika Bom Bali I terjadi. Imam Samudra yang divonis hukuman mati berargumen bahwa penyerangan tersebut adalah sebuah aksi jihad. Konsep jihad seperti ini membedakan ‘kita’ dan ‘mereka’ yang bertransformasi menjadi ‘frien’ dan ‘enemy’. Untuk melihat bagaimana Imam Samudra membentuk konsepsi musuh dalam jihadnya, tesis ini menggunakan pandangan Carl Schmitt tentang political enemy dan pemikiran Chantal Mouffe tentang proses transformasi musuh. Tesis ini terdiri dari tiga bagian utama. Diawali dengan cerita tentang biografi Jihad seorang Imam Samudra kemudian tesis ini menganalisa Jihad Imam Samudra dan pembentukan musuh didalamnya sebagai pembahasan utama, dan diakhiri dengan penjelasan kaitan Imam Samudra dan Jamaah Islamiyah. Argumentasi utama dalam tesis ini adalah Imam Samudra melihat Amerika Serikat dan demokrasi sebagai musuh dalam Jihadnya. Proses pembentukan Amerika Serikat dan demokrasi sebagai musuh sangat dipengaruhi oleh keberadaan Amerika Serikat sendiri sebagai hegemoni tunggal dan doktrin demokrasi universal dalam tatanan politik global.

This thesis analyses the issue of jihad contending the conception of enemy in the case of Imam Samudra. The problem of violence in the name of religion became more popular when Bali Bombing I took place. Imam Samudra which has found guilty for the crime came with an argument that such attack was a Jihad. This kind of Jihad distinguished ‘we’ and ‘they’ that transformed into ‘friend’ and ‘enemy’. To explore how Imam Samudra constructed the concept of enemy in his Jihad, this thesis uses Carl Schmitt’s idea about political enemy and Chantal Mouffe’s thought on the process of enemy transformation. This thesis has three main bodies. Started from the Jihad biography of Imam Samudra, this thesis analyses Imam Samudra’s Jihad and the construction of enemy within as the main discussion, and closed with the informative examination on Imam Samudra and Jamaah Islamiyah. The main argument of this thesis is Imam Samudra viewed United States of America and democracy as enemy in his Jihad. The process of constructing United States of America and democracy as enemy in Imam Samudra’s Jihad was strongly influenced by the existence of this state as a single unchallenged hegemony as well as the doctrine of universal democracy.
