The Reflection of Dystopia: A Study on Cormac McCarthy’s The Road

Thesis ini membahas tentang aspek‐aspek distopia dalam karya sastra kotemporer Amerika. Aspek‐aspek dystopia dalam kaya sastra Amerika adalah bentuk kritik terhadap semangat utopia pada pemikiran atau ideologi Amerika. Dahulu, Para intelektual Amerika membentuk nilai‐nilai yang utopis di dalam ideologi Amerika. Ada tiga ide utopia umum yang terkandung di dalam ideologi tersebut; kesejahteraan, religiusitas, dan optimisme. Bagaimanapun, saat ini, semangat utopia tersebut dipertanyakan karena kenyataan sosial yang terjadi. Cormac McCarthy adalah salah satu penulis kontemporer Amerika yang peduli terhadap perubahan semangat utopia ke semangat distopia. Hal itu terefleksi di dalam karyanya, The Road. Aspekaspek distopia yang terkandung dalam The Road, yaitu kemiskinan, pesimisme, dan keraguan. Kemiskinan dihubungkan dengan konsumerisme untuk mengetahui dampak lebih buruknya karena konsumerisme adalah salah satu efek samping visi Amerika. Sementara itu, pesimisme menjadi salah satu aspek distopia karena berhubungan erat atmosper masyarakat Amerika saat ini, terutama setelah tragedi Sembilan September. Selain itu, keraguan adalah refleksi perkembangan agama secara umum di Amerika. Semua aspek distopia ini berbeda dengan visi‐visi Amerika. Dengan menerapkan teori hermenutics Schleiermacher, saya membahas aspek‐aspek distopia pada The Road sebagai sebuah kritik sosial terhadap fenomena sosial yang terjadi pada masyarakat Amerika kontemporer. Dengan mengungkapkan aspek‐aspek distopia yang bertentangan dengan visi‐visi pemikiran terdahulu, ini membuktikan bahwa terjadi perubahan sosial dan paradigma pada kehidupan Amerika pada saat ini.

The thesis discusses dystopian aspects in an American literary contemporary work. Dystopian aspects in American Literary works are the criticism toward utopian impulse of American ideology or thought. In the past, American scholars formulated American ideology containing utopian spirits. There are tree common utopian ideas excerpted in the vision; prosperity, optimism, and religiousness. However, in the present, those utopian spirits are being questioned due to social fact occurred in America. Cormac McCarthy is one of contemporary writers who concerns to the change of utopian spirit into dystopian condition of American society. The concern reflects in his work, The Road. The dystopian aspects in The Road are poverty, pessimism, and doubt. Poverty is related to consumerism in order to see its worse impact since consumerism is the side effect of American vision. Meanwhile, pessimism is taken as one of dystopian aspects because it is related strongly to the atmosphere of American society in the present, especially after September eleven tragedy. In addition, doubt is the reflection of religious development in America generally. These dystopian aspects are different from American visions. By applying Schleiermacher’s hermeneutics, the study is about dystopian aspects in The Road as a social criticism toward social phenomenon occurred in the American contemporary society. By revealing dystopian aspects contradicted with the visions of old thought, it proves that social change and paradigm in American present life.
