PELATIHAN KETRAMPILAN MEMBACA UNTUK MENINGKATKAN KEMAMPUAN PEMAHAMAN MEMBACA SISWA

Reading is a thinking process of understanding a reading material. The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of reading skill training on reading comprehension ability of elementary school (ES) students with reading comprehension difficulties. The measurement of reading comprehension was done to eight ES students of grade 4th divided into experimental and control groups. The characteristics of subject in the study were students with average and high average intelligence, academic scores below average and reading comprehension difficulties. The study used method inspired by the read well program that was applied using tutoring and repetetion methods, given to small groups, used the guiding questions, and involving picture media. Hypothesis proposed in the study was that the reading skill training can improve the reading comprehension of ES students with reading comprehension difficulties. The design of this study was untreated control group design with dependent pretest and post test sample using switching replication. The analysis with Mann-Whitney U-test showed that reading skill training significantly improve the reading comprehension ability of ES students of grade 4th with reading comprehension difficulties (z=-2.381, p<0.05 dan z=-2.352, p<0.05) . Result of the measurement indicates that the reading skill training given for 16 sessions could improve the reading comprehension.
