Land use and land cover change in the Cikonde/Cimeneng watershed and the potential of watershed payments services (PWS) for upland conservation :: Case study Kertajaya Village, Gandrungmangu distric, Cilacap, Central Java, Indonesia

Land use change has direct impaet on soil, water and atmosphere and is thus directly related to many environmental issues. Watershed managements nowadays are more focus on the natural resour€e manag€ment and poverty reduction in upland area. PWS program were designed as alternative conservation in upland area. The aims of this research are to identifr land use changes in &e Kertajaya Village, to investigate the drivers of land use change and to identify actors' views on PWS as possible land use management options. This study based on qualitative approach. In-depth interview were carried out in Kertajayavillage as study area. Several farmer, village government officer, Perhutani officer and forestry department officer were interviewed to find out the land use change, the drivers and views an PWS. Beside interview, Focus Group Discussion was conducted with a group of village officer and a group of farmer. The result of the research are: the major land use changes were shifting of the Irrigated Paddy Fields into Plantation, Shrub/Bushes into Plantation, Dry Field into Plantation, Irrigated Paddy Field into Dry Field, krigated Paddy Field into Settlement, and Irrigated Paddy Field into Plantation. The drivers of land use change are many different progr&nme from govemment and political histary of Indonesia. The view on PWS were viewed skeptically by the most of stakeholders
