Background: Early postpartum hemorrhage is still a lead cause of maternal mortality in Indonesia and in the district of Nias as well.Therefore it necessary to investigated risk factors associated with early postpartum hemorrhage in Gunungsitoli Hospital, Nias, so the incidence of bleeding can be identified and anticipated from the risks that arise. Objectives: To determine risk factors associated with early postpartum hemorrhage in Gunungsitoli Hospital , District of Nias. Design: Case control study is used Methods: This study was conducted in delivery room at Gunungsitoli Hospital from October 2009 to April 2010. As much as 54 respondents meeting the eligibility in each group were enrolled. Results: Proportion level of education (38%) are high school. Proportion of the highest causes of postpartum hemorrhage is uterine atony in 28 cases (51%). Stimulation Oxytocin 5 IU and anemia (Haemoglobin level:<11gram/dl). The most dominant risk factors contributing to early postpartum hemorrhage are stimulation oxytocin 5 IU with OR:12.6 (CI 95%,.3.5-78.5; p:0.001) and anemia (Hb:<11gram/dl) with OR:7.53 (CI 95%;1.5-10.9; p: 0,006). Premature rupture of membranes, preeclampsia, eclampsia, induction oxytocin 5 IU, overdistensi uterus and parity (>:3) were not significant to increase postpartum hemorrhage at district. Nias (p:>0.05). Conclusions : Stimulation oxytocin 5 IU, anemia (Hb:<11gram/dl) are most dominant risk factors contribute to early postpartum hemorrhage.
