In search of African American optimism in blues :: A study on the Five B.B. King's Blues Songs

Selama ini blues selalu mengingatkan orang pada bentuk karya seni yang lekat dengan tema-tema kesedihan ketidakpuasan dan keputusasaan. Banyak kritikus ataupun para pakar dalam bidang ini seringkali mendefinisikan blues sebagai karya sastra melankolis dan pesimis. Blues karya B.B. King, terutama kelima lagu yang menjadi obyek material dari tesis ini yakni: The Thrill is Gone, Sweet Little Angle, Ain’t Gonna Worry My Life Anymore, Key to the Highway, dan Hummingbird, bisa dipandang sebagai pengecualian. Optimisme pada masyarakat kulit hitam Amerika pada masa lagu-lagu tersebut diciptakan tercermin dalam lirik-liriknya. Karakteristik dan syarat dari suatu sikap optimis, yakni: keyakinan terhadap kenyataan-kenyataan terbaik, masyarakat yang layak, sisi cerah dalam segala hal, dan kebaikan dalam realita, tercermin dalam kelima lagu tersebut. Blues telah dianggap sebagai salah satu dari sekian faktor yang mendorong munculnya antusiasme masyarakat kulit hitam Amerika di era tahun 30-an. Blues juga dipandang sebagai sesuatu yang tak terpisahkan dari peristiwa-peristiwa besar dalam sejarah masyarakat kulit hitam Amerika pada khususnya dan masyarakat Amerika pada umumnya pada masa-masa pasca perbudakan. Ditinjau dari sudut pandang sosiologi sastra, B.B. King, sang pencipta lagu, dipandang sebagai representasi dari masarakat pada saat itu. Pola pandangan, perilaku dan penilaian yang muncul dari representasi tersebut merupakan cerminan pandangan, perilaku dan penilaian dari keseluruhan masyarakatnya. Masyarakat tersebut memiliki dorongan yang dapat memaksa entitas-entitas di dalamnya bergerak sejalan dengan arus dorongan tersebut. Itu juga yang terjadi dengan B.B King, sebagai salah satu individu di dalam sebuah masyarakat. Bagaimanapun, entitas yang merupakan individu-individu di dalam suatu masyarakat juga menentukan bentuk dari masyarakat itu. Dalam masyarakat B.B. King, sikap optimisme terlihat dominan, tercermin dari data historis dan kelima lagu blues tersebut diatas. Maka dari itu tepatlah jika dinyatakan bahwa dorongan optimisme dari masyarakat itu telah memaksa B.B. King untuk menciptakan lagu yang melukiskan karakteristik- karakteristik optimisme

So far people have perceived blues as a form of art works which is so close to certain themes as sadness, discontentment and despair. Many critics and experts in this field often label blues as a melancholic and pessimistic work. B.B. King’s blues, notably the five songs to be the material objects of this thesis i.e. The Thrill is Gone, Sweet Little Angle, Ain’t Gonna Worry My Life Anymore, Key to the Highway, and Hummingbird can be seen as the exceptions. The African American optimism in the time of the song creation is reflected in the lyrics of the five songs. The conditions of optimism such as beliefs in the best possible life and events, worth-living society, the bright side of things, and goodness in reality, are portrayed in the five songs. Blues is perceived as one of the factors leading to the African American enthusiasm in the 30’s. Blues is also seen as something inseparable from big events in the history of African American people, and the history of America of the post slavery period. In the perspective of sociological literature, B.B. King is viewed as a representative of his society at that time. The standpoint, attitude, and conduct performed by the representative are reflections of those of the entire society. The society possesses drives that can force the entities in it to move in accordance with its direction. This also happens to B.B King, as an individual in a society. However, the entities, which are individuals in the certain society, determine the society forms as well. In B.B King’s society, the optimistic attitudes are dominant, reflected from the historical data and intrinsic elements of the five blues songs. For that reason, it is true to state that the drives of optimism of the society have coerced B.B. King to compose songs which portray optimistic characteristics
