An Analysis of safety belt usage dedicated to diferent age group :: A case study in Semarang

This research was conducted due to the high number of traffic accident in many countries which have already resulted a lot of fatality victims. In Indonesia, not only high number of motorcycle accident, but also a high number of private car accident. To decrease fatal accident, Indonesia has already had the regulation which is safety belt use law. By wearing safety belt on their trip, it is expected that they will be avoided from serious injuries if accident occurred. To make the safety belt law is being more considered among society, government enact the safety belt law enforcement and safety belt campaign, which also become the factors in this research. Beside those two factors, this research examines how factors such as emotional maturity, gender, age, income, occupation, education and other demographical issues will have an influence on safety belt usage This research is using questionnaires as an instrument tool for the research. The respondents in this research are people both driver and passenger who are continuously using private car as their mode of transport in Semarang, and the respondent age is between 17-61 (+) years old. This primary data collection will only be taken from the passenger car and not observing other car types. From the multiple regression analysis, it is found that from twelve independent variables which assumed to have an influence on safety belt usage, there are only some variables which have significant influence on safety belt usage (safety belt law enforcement, and emotional maturity). The regression analysis using Enter Method shows that the R score is 0.628. With R square shows 0.395, this means that only 39.5% from variation of safety belt usage can be explained with safety belt law enforcement, and emotional maturity. While the rest of it (60.5%) perhaps can be explained by other causes or variables.
