Globalisation impact on service industry in Indonesia :: Study case on flight attendant training industry

Globalisasi, yang oleh Friedman (2006) digambarkan dengan istilah “the world is flat” (dunia yang datar), berpengaruh secara luas dalam dunia bisnis. Riset ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi pengaruh globalisasi pada industri pelatihan pramugara pramugari di Indonesia dengan menggunakan analisa atas struktur industri, dan mencoba menyajikan kemungkinan solusi untuk mengatasi dampak yang ditimbulkan. Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam melakukan analisa industri adalah “Porterʼs Five Forces”. Strategi penelitian yang digunakan dalam riset ini adalah dengan membandingkan kondisi struktur industri saat ini dengan kondisi masa datang yang akan terjadi setelah adanya dampak dari globalisasi. Setiap elemen dari “Porterʼs Five Forces” baik untuk kondisi saat ini dan kondisi setelah dampak globalisasi terjadi, dianalisa dan diperbandingkan untuk melihat perbedaan utamanya. Sedangkan untuk mendapatkan kemungkinan solusi, penelaahan literatur penelitian atas subjek yang sejenis digunakan untuk mendapatkan referensi, dan dikombinasikan dengan teori dan temuan temuan dalam riset ini, untuk menghasilkan rekomendasi bagaimana cara yang tepat untuk mengatasi dampak globalisasi. Analisa atas setiap elemen dari struktur industri saat ini menunjukkan bahwa pelatihan pramugara pramugari di Indonesia mempunyai tingkat ancaman pesaing baru yang sedang ke tinggi, posisi tawar suplier yang sedang, posisi tawar konsumen yang tinggi, ancaman produk pengganti yang sedang, dan tingkat persaingan yang ada mempunyai tingkatan yang juga sedang. Sedangkan analisa atas struktur industri setelah adanya dampak globalisasi menunjukkan bahwa ancaman pesaing baru, ancaman produk pengganti, dan tingkat persaingan yang ada relatif tidak berubah, tetapi posisi tawar dari suplier dan juga konsumen meningkat sebagai dampak dari globalisasi tersebut. Dengan memperhatikan beberapa keterbatasan riset di sisi metodologi dan proses pengumpulan data, riset ini menyimpulkan bahwa globalisasi secara umum mempengaruhi bisnis, baik secara negatif dan positif. Pada kasus industri pelatihan pramugara pramugari di Indonesia, globalisasi mengurangi daya tarik industri. Hal tersebut terjadi sebagai dampak dari meningkatnya posisi tawar suplier dan konsumen.

Globalisation, that was described in a phrase “the world is flat” by Friedman (2006), affects most businesses in one way or another. This research try to identify the impact of globalisation on flight attendant training in Indonesia using the analysis of industry structure, and find out the possible solutions to deal with globalisation impacts affecting the industry. The tools used in the industry analysis is Porterʼs five forces framework. The research strategy to get the answer of research question of globalisation impact to the industry is using comparison of the current and projected industry structure due to globalisation. Each elements of Porterʼs five forces were analysed both in current and projected condition, and contrasted to get the differences. Whilst to find the possible solution, literature review of researches in other industries were used as references, combined with theories and findings in this research, to recommend how to deal with globalisation impact. The analysis on each elements of current industry structure suggest that flight attendant training in Indonesia has medium to high threat of new entrants, medium bargaining power of suppliers, high bargaining power of buyers, medium threat of substitutes product, and also medium level of rivalry among existing competitors in the industry. Whilst the analysis of the industry structure affected by globalisation find out that the threat of new entrants, threat of substitute products, and rivalry among existing competitors relatively unchanged, but bargaining power of both suppliers and buyers increasing due to globalisation impact. With regards to the limitation in this research in terms of planned methodology and data collection process, it can be concluded from this research that globalisation generally affected the industries in both negative and positive ways. In case of flight attendant training industry in Indonesia, globalisation shifted the industry structure becoming less attractive. It was due to the result of analysis on industry structure affected by globalisation, that suggest the increasing competitive forces particularly in bargaining power of suppliers and bargaining power of buyers.
