Laboratory investigation of skid resistance for steel slag utilization as chip seal

Slag as a waste material of steel-making process that has same characteristic as aggregate has widely been used in pavement construction, however, the utilization of slag as chip seal aggregate if it can provide skid resistance needs to be analyzed. In the laboratory, the samples of chip seal are made with utilizing steel slag and natural aggregate from Desa Clereng, Yogyakarta by varying 100%, 90% and 75% of weight of the aggregates, and for the material bonding asphalt and epoxy resin are used with single chip seal method. The skid resistance test for all chip seal samples and also pavement of hot rolled sheet wearing course without chip seal application is performed by using The Portable British Pendulum Tester. The laboratory test results show that the variations of chip seal aggregate weight are inconsistent, thus the utilization of 100% of weight aggregate is selected to represent analysis. The natural aggregate utilization as chip seal material produce high skid resistance value of 10.3% more than steel slag and 14.1% higher than new performance of the sample of hot rolled sheet. The steel slag utilization as chip seal material does not give skid resistance improvement.
