MERDEKA DI TANAH SENDIRI adalah harapan masyarakat Adat Malamoi dan sekaligus telah menjadi sumber spirit bagi komunitas ini di dalam mengelola gerakan sosial yang terjadi di Kota Sorong antara 1997-2004, bahkan hingga sekarang. Gerakan sosial yang dilakukan oleh masyarakat Adat Malamoi disebabkan oleh terjadinya peralihan status dan fungsi tanah Adat ex-Erfpacht verponding 3120 ha dalam Kota Sorong. Peralihan status tanah Adat ke tanah negara menurut perspektif pemerintah dan asumsi sebagian kaum pendatang telah merubah fungsi sosial tanah tersebut menjadi fungsi ekonomi. Perubahan status dan fungsi tanah ini dalam prakteknya menimbulkan benturan dengan nilai-nilai, aspirasi dan keinginan masyarakat lokal. Masyarakat Adat menyadari bahwa tanah ex-Erfpacht verponding masih status tanah Adat karena hak kepemilikan tanah tersebut belum dilepaskan pemilik tanah Adat kepada negara maupun pihak lain. Legalitas berita acara akta Erfpacht verponding No.1 Tahun 1951 produk pemerintah kolonial Belanda yang dijadikan dasar argumenn pemerintah sekarang untuk mengklaim tanah tersebut sebagai tanah negara ternyata sejak tahun 1997 dipertanyakan oleh masyarakat pemilik tanah Adat, karena pembuatan perjanjian tersebut tidak pernah melibatkan masyarakat Adat terutama para marga pemilik tanah. Gugatan masyarakat Adat dilakukan dalam bentuk gerakan protes ditujukan kepada Pemerintah Daerah Kabupaten Sorong waktu itu dengan harapan pemerintah lokal dapat menfasilitasi suatu pertemuan untuk membahas kembali status, bentuk peralihan hak atas tanah dan konpensasi yang semestinya diterima oleh masyarakat Adat. Gugatan itu dilakukan dalam bentuk pernyataan eksistensi diri dan protes. Bentuk konkrit dari gugatan-gugatan itu dapat dilihat dari nyanyian lagu daerah yang dinyanyikan, surat menyurat, pemasangan papan klaim, dialog, demonstrasi massa hingga pemalangan terhadap instansi-instansi pemerintah. Gerakan sosial secara efektif diperjuangkan melalui kehadiran lembaga Adat yang dibentuk untuk maksud tersebut namun dalam perjalanannya organisasi ini tidak luput dari konflik-konflik internal dan krisis kepemimpinan. Walaupun belum mencapai target dari akar tuntutannya yaitu masalah tanah ex-Erfpacht verponding namun gerakan sosial yang dilakukan dalam batasan tertentu telah berhasil mendesak Pertamina memperhatikan masyarakat Adat melalui dana komunity development dan disisi yang lain gerakan sosial yang dilakukan telah berhasil membangkitkan kesadaran etnis suatu modal politik ketika elit komunitas ini masuk ke arena politik, suatu perjuangan panjang untuk menjadi tuan dinegeri sendiri.

Effective social movements fighting for the presence of customary institutions established for that purpose, but the way this organization did not escape from the internal conflicts and crises of leadership.
