Study of leadership and followersip relation in Asia :: Empirical study of AEONs managers in Asian countries

The purpose of this research is to examine the characteristics of leaders and that of followers as well as the relationship between those characteristics. Based on the characteristics of leaders and followers, this study further examined the correlation between those characteristics. In addition, this study examined job satisfaction, gender factor and the perspective for human resource management system held by employees in the organization in relation to the characteristics of leaders and followers. Questionnaire was taken from Daft’s leadership model and Kelly’s followership model. Data collected from 998 respondents from AEON branch in Malaysia, Thailand, Hongkong, China and Japan. Using Cronbach Alpha test, leadership questionnaire value was 0,834 and followership questionnaire was 0.736, showed that it was reliable to do the research using these questionnaires. Using correlation and One-way ANOVA with 95% confidence level as the basis of our research method, the results of this study show that even though there are some differences among the countries observed, generally there are relations between leaders’ characteristics and followers’ characteristics in the country observed, with Thailand as an exceptional case. According to these results, we have created twelve propositions that are testable for future researches. This study also proposes practical implications and recommendation for the business operation of AEON as well as for Japanese MNCs in Asia in relation with leadership and followership characteristics.
