This study investigates poverty incidence in East Java during the period 1996- 2002 by employing the FGT index with SUSENAS data. The results present that the poverty incidence increased during the Asian crisis period but decreased after the crisis. According to the decomposition analysis developed by Huppi and Ravallion (1991) presents that the change of overall poverty in East Java is mainly caused by the sectoral gains, especially from rural areas. This implies that government should pay attention to poverty reduction in rural areas.
