The impact of government expenditure on poverty :: Case of Java 1996 1999 and 2002

This research investigates the impact of government expenditure on poverty. Using SUSENAS data of five provinces in Java Island from 1996 to 2002, total government expenditure seemed insignificant to reduce headcount index. Moreover, public good expenditure indicates the same sign. However, human capital expenditure signals an indication of poverty reduction. Therefore, government should spend more on increasing human capital in order to alleviate poverty
