Pedestrian safety often gets less attention from stakeholders and other road user. The motorized vehicle drivers often do not aware toward pedestrian, in which they do not give priority to pedestrian even though at school area. To improve motorized vehicle drivers’ awareness toward student pedestrian, Directorate General of Land Transportation have been implemented Safety School Zone (ZoSS). This research is aimed at comparing ZoSS (in this case is in front of SDN Dukuh I and II) and non ZoSS (in this case is in front of SDN Keceme II) to prove whether ZoSS is effective or not to improve school pedestrian safety. Besides, this research is also aimed at proposing some changes in physical design, Intelligent Transport System (ITS) for pedestrian in ZoSS and other related improvement in order to improve school pedestrian safety. Preliminary survey consisting of visual observation and traffic volume is carried out to determine the survey location. Speed measurement, behaviour study, and interview are applied in this research to collect the needed data. The collected data are subsequently compiled and analyzed by using MS Excel mostly. Z-test, proportion test, and t-test are used for inferential statistic. From data analysis and discussion, it can be conclude that the mean speed of motorized vehicles when passing zebra cross is around 64-65 km/h. Meanwhile, the mean speed of motorized vehicles when passing ZoSS is around 59-64 km/h. These speeds are quite higher comparing with speed limit at school area of 25 km/h. Even though there are only few student pedestrians (less than 10%) and attendances that disobey the codes to cross, it can put them more in danger. Most of pedestrian at non ZoSS feel unsafe when crossing at zebra cross (76% and 74% for student and non student pedestrian respectively). Furthermore, there is difference perception between student and non student pedestrians about safety when crossing at ZoSS (78% student pedestrian feel safe, whereas 49% non student pedestrian feel unsafe). It is caused by the existence of police or school guard when the student pedestrians crossing at ZoSS. The several factors that influence poor pedestrian safety in the research area are lack of traffic sign, motorized vehicle speed, less priority toward pedestrian, and road user behavior.
