Hegemony of white beauty standard in Toni Morrisons the Bluest Eye

Teori hegemoni yang digagas oleh Antonio Gramsci dipercaya sebagai alat untuk memahami posisi kelompok superior and inferior yang ada dalam masyarakat. Amerika Serikat adalah negara sadar ras yang memandang bahwa mereka yang ‘berwarna’ (yang berlawanan dengan orang kulit Putih) telah ditempatkan sebagai pihak yang lemah dan diperlakukan secara berlawanan. Dengan demikian, nampak bahwa White Anglo Saxon Protestants (WAPS) telah secara turun-temurun dianggap sebagai kelompok dominant yang kuat sedangkan warga keturunan Afrika-Amerika secara sadar dianggap sebagai pihak yang terpinggirkan. Sementara, konsep kecantikan merupakan salah satu bentuk institusi budaya sehingga standar yang dipergunakan pun berdasarkan pada kelompok-kelompok dominan yang ada di masyarakat, yakni orang kulit Putih hingga muncullah standar kecantikan yang bersumber dari orang kulit Putih sebagai bentuk praktek hegemoni dalam masyarakat Amerika. Phenomena ini telah digambarkan secara cerdas oleh Toni Morrison dalam karyanya The Bluest Eye. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan hegemoni standar kecantikan kulit Putih dalam masyarakat Afrika-Amerika yang diilustrasikan dalam novel tersebut serta menganalisa implikasi dari praktek hegemoni tersebut yang tergambar pula dalam karya sastra tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian pustaka dalam pengumpulan data dan juga menggunakan cara deskriptif analitis dalam rangka menampilkan hasil penelitian sesuai dengan tujuan penelitian yang telah ditetapkan. Data terkumpul dibagi menjadi data primer dan data sekunder. Data primer menempatkan karya The Bluest Eye dan sumber lainnya sebagai sumber data yang bermakna dalam penelitian ini sedangkan data sekunder merupakan data tang diambil dari buku dan referensi jurnal, review penelitian lain yang sangat mendukung penelitian terhadap karya sastra tersebut. Temuan dan pembahasan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa hegemoni konsep kecantikan orang kulit Putih telah menjadi praktek hegemoni yang secara sadar hidup dalam kehidupan masyarakat Afrika Amerika yang terlukis dalam karya sastra tersebut. Hegemoni itu sendiri berasal dari standar kecantikan orang kulit putih sebagai kelompok yang dominan yakni berkulit putih, bermata biru, berambut pirang, berbadan langsing dan lain-lain. Adanya hegemoni kecantikan kulit putih ini bukan merupakan satu-satu nya alasan untuk mempertahankan dominasi dan kekuatan; namun fakta nya masyarakat dan keinginan dan kesadaran mereka telah ikut berpartisipasi dan menyuburkan hegemoni tersebut. Pada akhirnya, implikasi pun muncul dalam masyarakat dibawah pengaruh hegemoni termasuk pada anggota masyarakat dalam novel yang dipelajari. Sebagai akibatnya, hegemoni kecantikan orang kulit putih telah mengarahkan pada praktek diskriminasi dalam satu ras yang sama yakni dalam sesama ras Afrika Amerika. Hal ini dikarenakan setiap karakter mencoba berlomba untuk mendapatkan ‘kedekatan’ dengan orang kulit putih. Yang kedua adalah hadirnya sikap benci diri sendiri serta penurunan derajat identitas diri sebagai seorang kulit hitam.

Theory of hegemony proposed by Antonio Gramsci has been believed as a means to understand the position of the superior and the inferior groups in the society. The former is seen as the powerful dominant group that can exercise their power in the society in order to maintain and to control power by inserting their values and belief system; the second is seen as the opposite ones that are consciously under the hegemony, and they accept and even internalize the belief in their daily life. The United States of America is a race-conscious society that those who are colored (as opposed to white) have generally been put in inferior positions and treated accordingly. Consequently, apparently White Anglo Saxon Protestants (WAPS) has been inherently put as the dominant group whereas the African American is consciously placed as one of the subordinate ones. Meanwhile, the concept of beauty is an example of cultural institution; hence, the standard of beauty is based on the dominant group e.g. White people, so there is the White beauty standard as a means of hegemonic practice in the American society. This phenomenon is thoughtfully depicted by Toni Morrison in The Bluest Eye. Therefore, this research aims at describing the hegemony of White beauty standard in African American society as it is depicted in Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye and analyzing the implications of the hegemonic practices of White beauty standard in Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye. This study employed library research in collecting the data, and it also employed the descriptive analytical manner in order to present the result of the analysis. Under the library research, the data were divided into the primary data and the secondary one. The former placed Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye and other resources as the valuable resource whereas the secondary data were taken from any other books, journals, research reviews which were supporting to the literary works under the study. The findings and the discussion of this research show that White beauty standard has been the hegemonic practice that is consciously alive in the African Americans as the society members involved in the story. The hegemony itself is from the beauty standards which are standardized using the White people’s beauty standards e.g. light skinned, blue eyes, blonde, slimmer body image, etc. The White beauty standard hegemony is not solely the single reason of maintaining domination and power; in fact, society members, and their will and consciousness have also participated in it. Therefore, the implications occur within the society under the hegemonic practices or the hegemonized society, so do the characters in this novel. Those implications are extracted from the characters living in the novel as the characters are the hegemonized subject in practice. It is the fact that White beauty standard hegemony has led to the emergence of intra-racial discrimination happening within the African American society as it is reflected in the literary work due to the characters’ efforts to seek for White’s approval. The second is the emergence of the self-loathing upon the characters in the novel, and the third is the emergence of the self-identity degrading.
