Tesis ini bertujuan untuk membahas mengenai sikap orang-orang kulit hitam Amerika terhadap berbagai permasalahan sosial yang kemudian mengarah pada adanya konflik antar ras yang digambarkan dalam Florence dan Like One of the Family karya Alice Childress. Tesis ini kemudian mengungkap mengenai karakteristik masyarakat di sekitar tokoh utama kulit hitam dalam kedua karya tersebut, apa yang dirasakan dan dipikirkan oleh tokoh utama sehubungan dengan konflik rasial yang mereka hadapi, bagaimana mereka beradaptasi di dalam masyarakat tersebut, dan apa yang membuat mereka akhirnya bangkit dan memutuskan berjuang melawan diskriminasi. Analisis ini berdasarkan pada pendekatan sosiologi yang menitikberatkan pada pembicaraan mengenai konteks sosial yang terdapat dalam sebuah karya sastra. Berdasarkan pembahasan, dapat disimpulkan bahwa kedua karya ini menggambarkan sikap masyarakat kulit hitam terhadap berbagai permasalahan rasial yang mereka hadapi. Meskipun diantara orang-orang kulit hitam itu ada yang merasa pesimis terhadap masa depan mereka sebagai akibat dari perlakuan diskriminatif orang-orang kulit putih, pada akhirnya kedua karya ini mengungkap kekuatan karakter masyarakat kulit hitam dengan menunjukkan bagaimana tokoh-tokoh kulit hitam dalam kedua cerita ini bangkit dan memutuskan untuk berjuang melawan diskriminasi masyarakat kulit putih. Melalui perspektif sosiologi, dapat disimpulkan juga bahwa sikap-sikap tersebut terbentuk dari perlakuan diskriminatif masyarakat kulit putih terhadap masyarakat kulit hitam.

This thesis discusses black Americans’ attitudes toward the problems leading to the racial conflicts depicted in Childress’ Florence and Like One of the Family. It aims at scrutinizing what kind of society the imaginary characters in these works live in, what they feel and think about the racial conflicts they must deal with, how they adapt to their society, and why they finally decide to fight against the racial conflicts they undergo. The analysis is conducted by using sociological approach as this approach concentrates on the social context of writing or on the literary text and its social meaning. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that Childress’ Florence and Like One of the Family reveal the attitudes of the black characters toward the problems which lead to the racial conflicts they face. These attitudes portray how some blacks remain pessimistic about their future as they think that there is nothing they can do to change the situation. However, some other attitudes found in these works describe how blacks are finally awake to the need to struggle for the betterment despite the difficulties they face, which reflects blacks’ strength and endurance to face the discrimination and prejudice they undergo. From the sociological perspective, it is clear that these attitudes are resulted from the treatment given by the black characters’ surroundings, which shows the condition of the society in which they live.
