Wacana tentang tuntutan korban lumpur Lapindo menarik untuk dikaji tidak hanya karena kasus tarik ulur pembayaran ganti rugi tetapi juga karena pihak Lapindo yang bertanggung jawab terhadap kasus lumpur Lapindo dan korban yang belum mencapai kesepakatan dalam menyelesaikan masalah akibat Lumpur Lapindo. Wacana tuntutan yang dikaji ini merupakan tuntutan tertulis yang berbentuk surat resmi yang ditulis oleh korban lumpur Lapindo tentang pembayaran ganti rugi atas hilangnya harta mereka. Kajian ini mencoba mendeskripsikan struktur wacana, situasi tutur, tindak tutur dan karakteristik wacana. Dalam penulisan kajian ini, penulis tidak hanya melihat wacana tuntutan korban lumpur Lapindo dari sudut pandang linguistik tetapi juga dari segi sosial. Segi kebahasaan mencakup adanya struktur wacana, aspek situasi tutur, tindak tutur, serta karakteristik wacana. Adapun dari segi sosial yaitu penggunaan konsep SPEAKING sebagai latar belakang dari karakteristik-karakteristik tersebut. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode observasi. Penulis melihat dengan seksama penggunaan bahasa pada surat dan menganalisisnya. Analisis data dilakukan dengan mengklasifikasikan data berdasarkan pada tujuan penelitian. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa wacana tuntutan korban lumpur Lapindo adalah wacana direktif yang mempunyai struktur, situasi tutur, tindak tutur, dan karakteristik yang berbeda dengan wacana direktif yang lain.

The discourse about Lapindo mud victims’ demand is interesting to study not only because it is time-consuming case but also the Lapindo party, who is responsible for the case of Lapindo mud, and the victims have not reached an agreement to solve the impacts of Lapindo mud. The discourse of the demand studied is written in formal letters which are written by the Lapindo mud victims in demanding for the compensatory payments for the loss of their properties. This study attempts to describe the structure of the discourse, the speech situations, the speech acts, and the characteristics of the discourse. In doing the study, the writer does not only view the discourse of the Lapindo mud victims’ demand from the linguistics side but also from the social side. The linguistic side includes the structure of the discourse, the speech situation, and the speech acts. On the other hand, the social side is analyzed by using the concept of SPEAKING as the background of the discourse characteristics. The method used in this study is observation method. The writer examines the use of the language in the letters and analyzes it. The analysis of the data is done by classifying the data based on the purposes of the study. The result of this study shows that the discourse of the Lapindo Mud victims’ demand is a directive discourse whose structure, the speech situations, the speech acts, and the characteristics are different from other directive discourse.
