Utilization of polyproylene synthetic aggregate and epoxy resin for chip sealing

World Health Organization estimates that 1,200,000 persons die in road each year. In Indonesia, at least 30 people death per day in the roadways. Slippery road caused by the insufficient skid resistance which. Synthetic aggregate had been researched to improve the strength of the pavement, and also to substitute the mineral aggregate. Polypropylene (PP) is one type of plastic polymer which have good chemical resistance properties and serves as an excellent protective barriers. Epoxy resin has been used and researched to improve the strength of the flexible pavement. This research try to evaluate the utilization of polypropylene as synthetic aggregate and epoxy resin as a binder in chip sealing process in order to improve the traffic safety by improving the skid resistance of pavement surface. Defining the aggregate spread rate, the variable that important are the ALD, and loose unit weight of the synthetic aggregate. The height of the binder are 2/3 of the ALD. The maximum aggregate spread rate in this research that resulting the highest improvement are 1.4 kg/m2. Utilization of polypropylene synthetic aggregate and epoxy resin for chip sealing improve the BPN 19.21 %. According to Kuttesch formula done in Virginia, utilization of polypropylene synthetic aggregate and epoxy resin for chip sealing improve the safety condition by lowering the accident frequency 89.49 %. Utilization of polypropylene synthetic aggregate and epoxy resin for chip sealing improve the friction coefficient 17.95 %. With the increasing of the friction coefficient, there are reduction of the vehicle stopping distance. The reduction of vehicle stopping distance is increasing as follows by the increasing of the vehicle speed. Utilization of polypropylene synthetic aggregate and epoxy resin for chip sealing can improving the safety condition by increasing the actual / real speed limit (critical speed), or in the same speed the stopping distance will reduce. The increasing actual speed (critical speed) in the darkness with low beam headlights (50 m) are 5.14%. The increasing actual speed (critical speed) in the darkness with high beam headlights (150 m) are 6.44%
