Agriculture development in Kabupaten Gungkidul :: Natural characteristics as a conceptual framework

Until its 178 years of founding, agriculture in Kabupaten Gunungkidul still becomes the backbone of the economy of this region. Agriculture development programs that have been implementing for years do not increase the welfare of smallholder farmers significantly. Same policies on agriculture development are implemented to all sub districts in this kabupaten, regardless the natural and environmental conditions of each sub district. This research analyzes the natural characteristics of this region that is divided into three zones in accordance with its geographical, geological, and topographical characteristics. Statistical data on agriculture and demography of this region in sub district level are analyzed in order to find the correlation among natural conditions, agriculture performance, and demographical composition. The findings from the data being analyzed are formulated to find appropriate policies on agriculture development. Employing descriptive analysis and verification of hypotheses analysis this research is able to prove that there are causalities relationship among demography composition, agriculture performance, and natural characteristics of the zone where the agriculture activities take place. This finding is used to formulate appropriate policies on agriculture development in Kabupaten Gunungkidul. Each zone with its own characteristics should be treated differently through implementing different policies that is more adaptable to the local conditions. Hopefully this may help the administrator of 9 this region to reach a greater achievement on agriculture development and finally effect on smallholder farmers’ welfare.
