Tesis ini berusaha untuk menggambarkan masalah kemiskinan ibu sebagai orang tua tunggal pada salah satu negara terkaya, Amerika Serikat. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana kemiskinan ibu sebagai orang tua tunggal di Amerika Serikat, untuk mempelajari kenapa ibu sebagai orang tua tunggal tersebut mempunyai kecenderungan untuk menjadi miskin baik secara historis, sociologis, kebudayaan, economi dan politik dan untuk mengetahui tanggapan dari pemerintah dan masyarakat terhadap permasalahan tersebut. Tesis ini dilaksanakan dengan menggunakan tiga rekonsiliasi yang diusung oleh McDowell sebagai pendekatan, yaitu rekonsiliasi waktu, tempat and bidang studi. Dengan menggunakan ketiga rekonsisliasi tersebut, masalah penelitian dapat dianalisis dengan berbagai sudut pandang untuk mendapat analisis yang mendalam dan menyeluruh. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa kemiskinan ibu sebagai orang tua tunggal adalah masalah serius di Amerika Serikat. Setengah dari keluarga yang miskin adalah ibu sebagai orang tua tunggal. Permasalahan kemiskinan ibu sebagai orang tua tunggal yang sangat berat dan menahun disebabkan oleh kompleksnya permasalahan tersebut. Kemiskinan mereka disebabkan oleh berbagai aspek dalam kehidupan. Mereka terpuruk baik secara social, kebudayaan, dan ekonomi. Secara histories permasalahan tersebut juga terus berlangsung. Pemeritah dan masyarakat sudah mencoba mengatasi permasalah tersebut, akan tetapi, permasalah tersebut sudah berakar pada struktur masyarakat, budaya dan economi dan politik dan terus berlangsung selama bertahun tahun. Hal ini menyebabkan masalah kemiskinan ibu sebagai orang tua tunggal sulit untuk dituntaskan dengan segera.

This thesis attempts to figure out the problem of single mothers’ poverty in the one of wealthiest nation, the United States. The objective of this study are to know how the single mothers’ poverty in the United States, to learn the factors that make women as single mothers tend to be poor in terms of historical, sociological, cultural, economic, and political perspectives, and to find out the responses of the government and the society toward the problem. The thesis is conducted by using three reconciliations proposed by Mc. Dowell as a theoretical approach, namely reconciliation of time, space and academic disciplines. Under the three reconciliations, the problem can be analyzed through various points of view to have deeper and wider analysis. The result of the research indicates that single mothers’ poverty is a serious problem in the United States. Single mothers represent almost a half of all poor family in the United States. The severity and longevity of single mothers’ poverty have been caused by the complexity of the problem. Single mothers’ poverty has been caused by many aspect of life. They are deprived socially, culturally and economically. Historically, the deprivation is persisted throughout the time. The government and the society do their efforts in solving the problem; however, the problem has deeply rooted within the structure of society, culture, economic and politic and has been persisted throughout the time. That is why the problem of single mothers’ poverty can not be solved instantly.
