Kajian ini menitikberatkan pada film-film gay sebagai budaya populer Amerika yang bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi citra kaum gay yang ditampilkan pada film-film Amerika dan ciri khas film-film gay Amerika, untuk mengetahui persepsi masyarakat terhadap film-film gay Amerika dan untuk memahami keberadaan kaum gay dalam masyarakat. Tesis ini mengunakan penelitian kepustakaan dengan menerapkan pendekatan analisa deskriptif dalam pengolahan data. Beberapa pendekatan seperti pendekatan sejarah dan sosiologi juga digunakan untuk menjelaskan sejarah dan kehidupan sosial kaum gay. Dalam mengobservasi film-film, Teori Simbol dan Reflektif digunakan untuk menganalisa 18 film gay Amerika sebagai data utama dan 14 film gay dari negara lain sebagai data pendukung. Semua film tersebut dipelajari dengan seksama untuk memperoleh citra kaum gay yang tercermin dalam film-film gay tersebut beserta ciri khasnya. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa film-film gay dapat menghibur para penonton dengan menampilkan kaum gay sebagai objek lelucon; pria gay membuka jati dirinya; gay sebagai simbol sex; maskulinitas pada kaum gay; dan gambaran kekerasan dalam kehidupan gay. Analisa data juga menunjukkan Film-film gay muncul dalam genres yang bervariasi seperti drama, komedi, romance, detektif, western, dan horor/misteri dengan 2 jenis citra kaum gay yang terdapat dalam film-film tersebut yaitu: potret gay sebagai kaum minoritas, dan pesimisme. Namun, dari observasi film-film tersebut, beberapa film gay Amerika menggambarkan kehidupan kaum gay yang baik, pasangan-pasangan gay yang bahagia, perkawinan sejenis, dan sebagainya.

This study focuses on the gay films as popular culture in America. It is intended to identify the images of gays depicted in American films as well as the characteristics of American gay movies, to find out how the society perceive the gay films and to understand the existence of gay people in the society. This thesis incorporates a library research by applying an analytical descriptive approach in analyzing the data. Some essential approaches such as sociological and historical approaches are applied to explain the history and the social life of gay people. In screening the movies, The Symbol and Reflective theory is used by concentrating on 18 American gay films as the primary data and 14 gay films from other countries as the supporting data. All the films are studied in order to acquire the images of gay people portrayed in the films and the characteristics of the gay films. The research findings show that gay films can attract the audience by describing gays as the objects for laughs; gays revealing their sexual identities; sexual scenes of gays; masculine gay men; and violence in gay life. The outcome of the data analysis shows that gay films appear in various types of genres such as drama, comedy, romance, detective, western, and horror/mystery with 2 images of gay people shown in American gay movies; they are the portrait of gays as a minority and the pessimism. However, from the film observation, it also shows that some American gay films picture good gay life, happy gay couples, gay marriage, etc.
