Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan keterkaitan antara kritik sastra Sunda AR dengan persoalan substansi masyarakat Sunda, seperti tercermin dalam proses diskursif ranah publik media massa berbahasa Sunda dekade 1950-an dan 1960-an. Dalam penelitian ini diungkap pula keberpihakan kritikus, strategi, gaya yang digunakan, serta efektiv itas kritik AR dalam memenuhi fungsi sosialnya. Tujuan tersebut ditempuh dengan memilih penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Hasilnya, kritik sastra Sunda AR berkaitan erat dengan masalah substansi dalam ranah publik media massa Sunda dekade 1950-an dan 1960-an, yaitu keterpurukan masarakat Sunda dalam bidang politik, ekonomi, dan kebudayaan. Untuk mengatasi masalah ini AR mencanangkan renaisans Sunda, yaitu bangunnya kembali jiwa aktif-kreatif manusia Sunda. Upaya ini sebenarnya merupakan kelanjutan dari proses modernisasi dalam masyarakat Sunda yang sudah dimulai sejak pertengahan abad ke-19. Secara ideal kritik sastra Sunda AR sangat efektif dalam menyelesaikan persoalan tersebut. Akan tetapi, di dalam praktik menjadi ambivalen karena substansi dan ekspresinya (gaya) seringkali tidak sejalan.

The aim of the research is to describe the relationship between Sundanese literary criticism by AR and the substantial problem of the Sundanese people as was reflected in the public discursive process in the Sundanese mass media of the decades of 1950s and 1960s. In this research were described the critic’s side, strategy, style used, and the effectiveness of AR’s criticism as a social function. The descriptive qualitative research was applied. The result of the research is Sundanese literary criticism by AR is closely related with the substantial problem in the Sundanese mass media in the decades of 1950s and 1960s, that is, the poor condition of the Sundanese people in the political, economic and cultural fields. To overcome this, AR put forward the idea of the Sundanese renaissance, which means that Sundanese people should be active and creative again. This attempt was actually the continuation of modernization process of the Sundanese people which had been started since the middle of the nineteenth century. Ideally, Sundanese literary criticism by AR was very effective in overcoming the above-mentioned problem. However, in practice this became ambivalent because the substance and the expression or style did not go hand in hand.
