2007 | Tesis | PPDS I Ilmu Penyakit DalamLatar belakang. Penderita DM cenderung mengalami komplikasi akut atau kronik. Komplikasi makrovaskuler DM meliputi aterosklerosis dan akibatnya. Kematian akibat aterosklerosis sangat besar.
Background. Diabetes Mellitus patients are at risk for acute and chronic complications. Macrovascular complication including atherosclerosis and the consequences. Death due to atherosclerosis is the major cause. Oxidative stress play an important role in development and progression of atherosclerosis. Alphatocopherol is one of antioxidant postulated to potentially decreased atherosclerosis. Objectives. The purpose of the study was to assess the mean difference of α- tocopherol levels in type 2 DM with and without peripheral arterial disease. Methods. This is a cross-sectional study in outpatients with type 2 DM recruited from Sardjito General Hospital, Yogyakarta on August-December 2006. Sample that fulfilled the criteria grouped into peripheral arterial disease and without peripheral arterial disease. Results. From 53 subject that fulfilled the criteria, 25 subject (48,1%) were men dan 28 subject (51,9%) were women, with 19 subjects have peripheral arterial disease. There was no significantly difference of mean α-tocopherol plasma levels between type 2 diabetes mellitus with and without peripheral arterial disease but there was significantly difference of sex between two groups (p< 0,05). Conclusion. There was no statistically difference of mean α-tocopherol plasma levels between type 2 diabetes mellitus with and without peripheral arterial disease.
