Kecamatan Tebas, Kabupaten Sambas ( Provinsi Kalimantan Barat) adalah penghasil utama dari varitas khusus dari buah jeruk, yang dikenal dengan sebagai jeruk siam( Jeruk Pontianak). Pada saat ini jeruk dapat berbuah sepanjang tahun, jadi tidak tergantung musim. Sampai saat ini kulit jeruk menjadi salah satu masalah pemda, karena pada saat panen raya menjadi sampah dan mengotori lingkungan. Padahal kulit jeruk berpotensi sebagai sumber minyak atsiri (yang terdiri dari l-limonen, β-mirsen, β-pinen dan α-pinen), merupakan ramuan mahal yang digunakan untuk industri farmasi , sebagai obat-obatan, makanan dan kosmetika. Salah satu metoda untuk mengambil minyak atsiri yang berharga adalah pengepresan dingin. Alasan dari metoda ini dari metoda yang lainnya adalah karena sangat sederhana, sehingga dapat diterapkan oleh industri kecil menengah di Kalimantan Barat.Tujuan dari penelitian ini difokuskan pada proses parameter yang yang sangat mempengaruhi pengambilan minyak atsiri dari kulit jeruk dengan cara pres dingin. Penelitin bertujuan untuk mempelajari efek dari ukuran kulit jeruk dan tekanan yang dipergunakan pada proses pengambilan minyak atsirinya. Minyak kulit jeruk yang dihasilkan akan dianalisis untuk diketahui komponen utama kandungannya. Hasil penelitian membuktikan bahwa variasi ukuran / perajangan bahan baku yang dipres sangat mempengaruhi rendemen minyak. Ukuran bahan yang terlalu kecil akan menyebabkan minyak hilang sebelum dipres, untuk mengatasi hal ini diperlukan pisau yang tajam dan tipis. Sebaliknya apabila perajangan terlalu besar maka minyak yang ada pada bahan sangat sulit keluar karena tahanan difusi yang harus dilawan terlalu besar. Dari eksperimen ini diperoleh ukuran optimum 3-4 mm. Sedangkan tekanan yang diberikan pada bahan juga berpengaruh terhadap rendemen minyak secara keseluruhan, tetapi tidak sebesar pengaruh variasi ukuran / perajangan

District of Tebas, in the sub province of sambas (West Kalimantan Province) is a major producer of special variety of orange fruit, which is locally known as jeruk siam (Pontianak Orange). The fruits can be harvested throughout the year and are not significantly affected by seasonal changes. At this moment, the orange pell creates a serious environmental problem as it is just dumped as garbage, whose smell eventually becomes very disturbing in the neighborhood. On the other hand, actually this orange peels are potential as source of orange essential oil (usually consist of l- limonen,ß- mirsen,ß-pinen and α-pinen). Which is expensive ingredient to be used in fine chemical industries, such as pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic industries. One of the method to recover this valuable essential oil is cold press. The reason of choosing this method among other possible ones is mainly because of its simplicity so that it is potentially adopted by small/medium scale industries in West Kalimantan. The study presented in this paper is then focused on the process parameters which significantly affect the recovery of orange essential oils from orange peel by cold press method. The research was intended to study the effect of orange peel size and pressure applied on the extend of essential oil recovery. The obtained oil was then analyzed to investigate its major chemical substituents. The results indicated that variation of size of orange peel slices significantly influenced the oil recovery. Orange peel which was cut too small promoted unintentionally losses of essential oil before the pressing process. On the contrary, the size which too big created additional obstacle for oil diffusion so that it was more difficultto squeeze the oil out of the orange peel, even at higher preesure. The optimum size was found to be arround 3-4 mm. The pressure applied also affected the oil recovery, but the effect was statistically not as significantly as the effect of the size of orange pell slices.
