Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan pengaruh volume bahan baku pada destilasi uap minyak atsiri dari nilam. Metode penelitian secara eksperimen dengan menggunakan alat destilasi uap terdiri dari boiler, destilator, kondensor dan separator yang berkapasitas 10 kg Nilam, kemudian pengisian volume destilator bervariasi antara 50% s.d 100% nilam kering yang telah dirajang dan uap air dari boiler dialirkan ke dalam destilator, uap air dan minyak nilam mengalir ke dalam kondensor selanjutnya minyak nilam dipisahkan dari air dengan menggunakan separator dan minyak nilam mudah dipisahkan dari air karena tidak larut dan berat jenisnya lebih rendah sehingga terapung di atas lapisan air. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan setiap 30 menit selama 5 jam. Proses destilasi dihentikan setelah minyak habis terambil serta data pengaruh volume terhadap rendemen nilam dapat diperoleh. Hasil penelitian menyimpulkan bahwa makin besar volume nilam dalam destilator semakin kecil rendemen nilam yang dihasilkan dan pengaruh setiap volume terhadap rendemen nilam dapat dilihat pada tabel di bawah ini

The aim of this research is to find the effect of raw material volumes of pogostemon on the steam distillation. The equipments consist of boiler, distiller, condenser and separator. The maximum capacity of distiller is 10 kg of pogostemon (Nilam) leaves and branches. The volumes of the pogostemon varied from 50% to 100%. The experiment started with filling the distiller with a certain amount of pogostemon leaves and branches, then steam from boiler was flowed to the distiller. Steam and essential oil flowed to the condenser and condensed then separated in the decanter. The essential oil was in the upper layer. The samples were taken regularly every 30 minutes, for 5 hours operation. The process was stopped when there was no more essential oil. The data obtained were volume of essential oil at different time. The result showed that the more volumes of pogostemon leaves and branches in the distiller, the less of the patchouli oil rendemen, it can be seen in the table of below.
