Thesis ini bertujuan untuk menguji semangat perlawanan seperti yang tercermin dalam Gone with the Wind karya Margaret Mitchell, yang melukiskan wanita pada abad ke-19 yang tindakan dan tingkah lakunya memiliki kesamaan dengan tradisi pada masa hidup si pengarang. Studi ini dilakukan berdasarkan teori-teori Pengkajian Amerika yang menerapkan studi interdisipliner. Pendekatan-pendekatan histori-biografi, sosiologi dan sastra digunakan untuk mengamati dan menafsirkan dua dunia yang berbeda—dunia pengarang dan sang tokoh. Studi ini menemukan bahwa tahun 1920-an merupakan suatu masa terjadinya perubahan-perubahan baru dan merupakan masa pertumbuhan kemakmuran Amerika. Perkembangan teknologi dan diterimanya Amendemen ke-19 setelah Perang Dunia I, telah memberikan kontribusi terjadinya suatu perubahan besar di dunia wanita. Semangat perlawanan yang terlukis di novel disimpulkan merupakan cerminan semangat yang dimiliki kaum flapper—semangat yang sama yang dimiliki pengarang.

This thesis aims to examine the rebellious spirit as reflected in Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind, portraying a woman of the nineteenth century who seemingly acted and behaved in line with the tradition of the age the author had lived in. The study is conducted under American Studies theories which applies interdisciplinary study. The historical-biographical, sociological and literary approaches are used to perceive and interpret the two different worlds—those of the author and the character. The study found that the 1920s was a new period of changes and the growing American prosperity. After World War I, the advancement of technology and the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment had contributed to a big change in the world of women. There was a strong inference that the rebellious spirit portrayed in the novel was reflecting the same spirit possessed by the flappers—the spirit the author of the novel had much in common with.
