Dengan potensi bidang perikanan yang cukup besar dan selalu bertambah masyarakat pesisir pantai di kelurahan Setapuk Besar mestinya hidup lebih sejahtera, namun kenyataannya sebagian besar masyarakat masih tergolong miskin dan kekurangan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan faktor-faktor yang menentukan pendapatan nelayan, hubungan pendapatan dan aspek sosial dengan kondisi rumah nelayan di kelurahan Setapuk Besar. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode penelitian kuantitatif dengan analisa data berdasarkan perhitungan statistik untuk mengetahui faktor yang menentukan pendapatan nelayan, hubungan pendapatan dan aspek sosial dengan kondisi rumah nelayan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pendapatan nelayan ditentukan oleh penggunaan faktor sarana produksi, pemasaran hasil dan aktivitas lain serta kegiatan keluarga nelayan. Pendapatan nelayan berhubungan dengan luas rumah, material rumah, fasilitas dan utilitas rumah serta keinginan nelayan terhadap rumah, selain itu aspek sosial yakni umur, pendidikan, kegiatan sosial yang diikuti dan status kepemilikan rumah mempunyai hubungan dengan kondisi rumah nelayan.

The abundant marine resources as available in the area of Setapuk Besar are supposed to bring about higher welfare level to the fishing population. Nevertheless, the great majority of fishing populations in the village are poor and desperate. This research is aimed at explaining the factors determining to income level of the fishing population, and relationship beetwen income levels, housing conditions and other socio-economic welfare indices. A household survey method was employed to study the subject and a quantitative data analysis was done to address the research objectives. Simple crosstabulation techniques and descriptive statistic measures were used in data analysis from which the relationship between income levels, housing conditions and other socio-economic welfare variables are explained. The research reveals that the household income level of the fishing population is determined by the level of the use of various production means, marketing channel, and other economic activities of non-fishing household members. The higher income level attained by the fishing households, the larger the house size, the better building materials used, and the better furnished the house with various amenities. The housing condition is strongly determined by the age of the head of households, educational attainment, and participation in community activities.
