Desain sistem pembacaan meter otomatis adalah suatu rancangan (arsitektur) sistem pembacaan jarak jauh dari pusat konrol terhadap meter-meter yang terpasang di lokasi pelanggan secara terjadwalkan, dimana sistem tersebut secara otomatis dapat menghasilkan beberapa laporan penting yang dibutuhkan oleh perusahaan listrik dan pelanggan. Komponen sistem tersebut terdiri dari meter elektronis, media komunikasi, aplikasi pembacaan otomatis, dan sistem manajemen basis data (database management system, disingkat DBMS), dimana yang menjadi fokus penelitian ini adalah bagaimana menentukan letak pusat kontrol dan mendesain DBMS tersebut. DBMS terdiri dari komponen data input meliputi data induk pelanggan (DIL) dan data hasil pembacaan meter (load survey, billing history, event log, dan pembacaan meter sesaat), logika program daftar pelanggan yang perlu diperhatikan (DLPD), dan data keluaran berupa laporan- laporan yang dibutuhkan.

A design of an automatic meter reading (AMR) system is based on the architecture for remote meter reading to enable the centre to control according to the schedule, additionally the system automatically provides the data needed by utility company and the customers. The system consists of the main components, namely electronic meters, communication channel, AMR software, and database management system (DBMS). The focus of the research was how these components work properly to determine the position of the control centre, especially the application of the DBMS of AMR system. The DBMS required as input data the basic customer account data and retrieved meter reading data (load survey, billing history, event log, and instantaneous meter reading), program logic of customer list which deserves serious attention, and some reports as output data.
