New York upper class society's image of woman in the late Nineteenth Century :: A Study on Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence (1920)

Tesis ini berhubungan dengan citra atau stereotip perempuan kelas atas di New York terutama di akhir abad sembilan belas seperti yang tercermin pada novel karya Edith Wharton berjudul The Age Of Innocence (1920). Tujuan dari studi ini adalah mengungkapkan citra perempuan kelas atas di New York, melihat pengaruh pengalaman pengarang dalam pengambaran citra perempuan tersebut dan mengambarkan persepsi penulis, Edith Wharton, terhadap citra perempuan itu. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kepustakaan dan dilakukan dengan pendekatan interdispliner yang mencakup beberapa disiplin ilmu seperti sejarah, sosiologi, antropologi, psikologi dan sastra. Penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa di era industrialisasi pada akhir abad sembilan belas, Amerika menikmati kejayaan ekonomi dan menyaksikan kemunculan orang-orang kaya yang menempati posisi kelas teratas dalam stratifikasi sosial. Kelompok masyarakat kelas atas ini memelihara suatu standar interaksi sosial bagi anggotanya terutama perempuan sesuai dengan kerangka Cult of True Womanhood. Akibatnya aspek-aspek Cult itu antara lain kesalehan, kesucia, kepatuhan dan kerumah tanggaan harus tercermin dalam citra perempuan baik diruang publik maupun rumah tangga. Hasil studi ini mengungkapkan bahwa pencitraan semacam itu yang ketat menandai kemunculan gerakan Wanita pada abad 19. Edith Wharton melalui novelnya mengambarkan fenomena ini. Dia menunjukan bahwa ketatnya pencitraan ini telah menyebabkan perempuan memperlihatkan keluguan yang palsu dan diperlakukan secara tidak adil. Akan tetapi, dia juga lebih jauh mengungkapkan bahwa tidak mudah bagi perempuan kelas atas ini untuk keluar dari pencitraan semacam itu dan menerima perubahan karena lamanya berada dalam kerangka persepsi budaya yang mengacu pada Cult of True Womanhood. Akhirnya penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa peringatan Wharton akan akibat penerapan citra perempuan seperti yang dianjurkan oled cult diatas dan pentingnya menempatkan perempuan sebagaimana mestinya.

This thesis mainly deals with the image of woman of upper class society in New York particularly in the late nineteenth century as reflected in Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence (1920). The study is aimed at revealing the New York upper class society’s image of woman, tracing the influence of the author’s experience in the presentation of the woman image, and illustrating the perception of New York upper class society as represented by Edith Wharton’s perception toward the image of woman. This study is library research and conducted under the umbrella of interdisciplinary approach which applies the historical, sociological, anthropological, psychological and literary perspectives. The analysis of this study shows that at the era of industrialization in the late nineteenth century, America enjoyed its economic triumph and witnessed the presence of the wealthy class that occupied the highest class in the society. This upper class society maintained a standard of interaction for its member particularly women as framed in its Cult of True Womanhood. Consequently, the aspects of this Cult such as piety, purity, submissiveness, and do mesticity ought to be reflected in the image of woman in both public sphere and domestic sphere. The result of the study reveals that the rigid implementation of the stereotype for image of woman gained the reaction as marked by the rise of woman movement in nineteenth century. Edith Wharton through her novel depicts the phenomena. She shows that the rigidity of the standard had caused New York upper class women to act in fake innocence and being treated unequal to men. She further describes that it was not easy for women to go out from the social standard and welcome the change for the long nurturance of the cultural perception based upon the Cult of True Womanhood. Wharton points out that there was ambiguity among most women whether to accept the change as radically voiced by the woman movement activists or to still cling to the Cult. She tends to warn the effect of such woman image and the need of treating woman properly.
