Relation and role of two strategic local elites in initiating local peace :: Study of the Lirboyo Pesantren and the Gudang Garam factory in Kediri municipal

The thesis considers to formulate main problem of research on why in Kediri did not occurred conflicts and acts of violence where in many others regions happened along lines transition and reformation era since 1996 and years after, whereas in its past historical background after the independent this area full of chaos, conflicts and socio-ideological contestations? Because based its formulation problem on two social shifting, hence the thesis is passing question when the shift of peaceful Kediri live started to be developed? Who are the main actors initiating and concerning to the platform? To trace possibility of paradigm and role shifting of actors along their history the thesis will pass a question how is social history of every the actor? Through survey and introductory study the thesis finds there are two strategic local elites –the Lirboyo pesantren which is in some extents as cultural elite and the Gudang Garam factory which is in some extents as economic elite— are important role actors in initiating local peace in Kediri. Then the thesis start to trace the history of founding, including the actors and the social context which influenced them. It continues to trace how they struggled to be local elites strategic. To explain the history of Lirboyo it will explore process of Islamization in Kediri. Whereas to explain Gudang Garam history the thesis will relate it with the development of Chinese immigrant. Furthermore the thesis will trace three main problems that are integration pioneering by these two local elites, experience of commitment examination in a critical period transition era, and the last about cooperation cases of both. As integration area it will explore the early negotiation as way of finding harmony as collective value. While as cases of integration, cooperation, and interest, the thesis explores Islamization in a cigarette factory, the demonstration of Gudang Garam, and role of the Gudang Garam in the NU congress in the Lirboyo pesantren in 1999. Finally the thesis conclude that the association between religion and industry have encouraged religious elites to formulate a differently collective value from valued committed before. As far as the thesis studied, we could draw an important lesson that religious identity could not stand alone and discrete from other identities. The formulation of religious identity was often influenced by other identities around. A peace making ---a costly and valuable value in Indonesian society recently--- as collective value in local experience in Kediri. It could not be disassociated from the role of two strategic local elites becoming a discourse of the thesis. It is exaggerating to say that the two strategic local elites got the one actor who is in charge of the continuity social life potentially resolving of conflict and mass violence. Nevertheless both have denoted that the involved side may be even getting avan garde, from the making of peace collective value and managed its in social practices.
