Perpustakaan merupakan jantungnya universitas, merupakan organ yang sangat vital. Kualitas perpustakaan akan mempengaruhi kualitas anak didik dan hasil penelitian lembaga induknya. UPU Perpustakaan UGM sebagai salah satu unit layanan informasi diharapkan mampu menyediakan informasi maupun sarana yang diperlukan untuk temu kembali informasi. Perkembangan teknologi dan ilmu pengetahuan menimbulkan dampak pada tempat dan proses temu kembali informasi. Tersedianya layanan teknologi komputer diharapkan mampu memenuhi kebutuhan pemakai akan informasi. Metode penelitian yang mengunakan adalah penelitian campuran deskriptif kualitatif dan penelitian survey. Populasinya adalah seluruh pemakai UPU Perpustakaan UGM, meliputi mahasiswa UGM (S0,S1,S2, dan S3), dosen, peneliti, karyawan UGM dan pemakai dari luar UGM. Metode yang digunakan cara observasi, wawancara, dan penyebaran kuesioner sejumlah populasi 200 responden. Analisanya dengan menginterpretasikan hasil wawancara, dan hasil kuesioner survei. Analisis data berlangsung bersamaan dengan proses pengumpulan data, atau melalui 3 tahapan model alir dari Miles dan Huberman (1992 : 20 ) dikutip (Bungin 2003: 229) yaitu tahap reduksi data, penyajian data, dan verifikasi. Hasil temuan dari penelitian pemanfaatan teknologi komputer di UPU Perpustakaan UGM memberikan dampak positif, artinya pemakai termotivasi untuk datang ke perpustakaan. Harapan pemakai sarana unit komputer perlu ditambah jaringannya dan kelengkapannya (kursi, ruang ber AC, jam layanan lebih lama). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan 94% pemakai datang ke perpustakaan untuk mencari bahan-bahan referensi yang digunakan oleh dosen-dosen mereka, termasuk bahan referensi untuk mendukung penulisan paper (tugas akhir), bahan bacaan perkuliahan, skripsi, penelitian dan hasil praktikum. Keberadaan dan penerapan teknologi komputer di perpustakaan untuk mengganti kartu katalog mampu mengurangi antrian. Pemakai tidak merasa canggung, untuk memanfaatkannya secara optimal. Pemakai selalu mengikuti trend teknologi komputer, dan memiliki minat baca yang tinggi. Koleksi yang ada di UPU Perpustakaan UGM ternyata 75% telah memenuhi kebutuhan pemakai, demikian juga jumlah komputer cukup memadai, namun perlu ditambah jumlahnya. Akses layanan internet dalam penelitian ini termasuk cepat dan lebih baik dibandingkan dengan yang ada di perpustakaan fakultas. Pemakai ketika menggunakan program SIPUS tidak mengalami kesulitan, karena programnya mudah dipahami. Sikap petugas ketika memberikan layanan ke pemakai telah memenuhi kebutuhan pemakai. Sistem layanan sirkulasi menggunakan satu sistem kartu pinjam sehingga memudahkan pemakai dan petugas.

Library is heart of the university and a vital part of the university. The quality of the library will impact the quality of the students and the research. Main Library of Gadjah Mada University as a unit of the information service is expected to be able to provide the information which can fulfill the user needs and also can be a place to process information retrieval. In addition, the available of the computer technology service can motivate the user to visit library more often. Research method which is used is mixture research i.e descriptive qualification and survey. The respondents who are interviewed consisted of S0, S1, S2, S3, lecturer, researcher, staff of UGM and the users outside of UGM. Whereas, some methods which are used were observation, interviewed and distributed the questionnaire to 200 users. Analysis is done after interpreting the result of interviews and the survey which the data analysis and the process of the data collecting were observed at the same time. The 3 flow models of Miles and Huberman in Bungin is used i.e data reduction, data presentation, and verification. The result of the research of the computer technology use in Gadjah Mada Library, as follows: it provides positive impact to the user to visit the library, it shows 94% of the user search the reference materials which are used by the lecturer including papers, lecturing materials, thesis, result of the research and result of the laboratory, it is expected the implementation of the computer technology in the library can change the catalog card to cut the long queue, it shows 75% of the user know very well how to use the computer optimally. The user always follow the technological trend of the computer, and have the enthusiasm high to read. Collection of The Main Library of Gadjah Mada University in the reality shows 75% have fulfilled the user requirement, and so do sum up the adequate computer enough, but require to be added its amount. The service of access internet in this research is inclusive of quickly and better compared depend to library of faculty. The user used the SIPUS program very easy, because its program is easy to use. The staff giving services attitude of the user very fulfilled and the system of services circulation use one card system, so that facilitate made easy for staff and the user.
