Discrimination against the Chinese ethnic in Maxine Hong Kingston's China Men and Richard Oh's the Pathfinders of love

Studi ini bertujuan untuk meneliti bagaimana novel-novel karya Maxine Hong Kingston yang berjudul China Men dan Richard Oh yang berjudul The Pathfinders of Love mengungkapkan isu perlakuan diskriminatif terhadap etnis Cina di Amerika dan di Indonesia. Studi ini juga bertujuan untuk menelusuri munculnya produk hukum yang diskriminatif di kedua negara dan efek sosial dan budaya terhadap etnis Cina. Studi ini menggunakan teori rekonsiliasi “tenses” (past, present, future), teori rekonsiliasi disiplin akademik, dan teori “mikro ke makro.” Pendekatan rekonsiliasi tenses untuk kedua Negara yang diperbandingkan menggunakan pendekatan sejarah. Rekonsiliasi disiplin akademik dalam studi ini menerapkan pendekatan interdisipliner yang menerapkan pendekatan sejarah untuk menelaah dan menganalisa bagian-bagian sejarah kedua Negara yang relevan dengan munculnya produk hukum yang diskriminatif terhadap etnis Cina, pendekatan sosiologis untuk mengungkapkan wujud diskriminasi di masing-masing Negara, dan pendekatan sastra untuk menganalisa karya sastra secara mendetil sehingga aspek yang relevan dapat menonjolkan isu yang diteliti. Pendekatan mimesis terhadap karya sastra digunakan untuk membuktikan bahwa dunia mikro karya sastra merupakan refleksi dunia makro yang nyata, dalam hal ini kenyataan pengalaman orang Cina Indonesia dan Cina Amerika. Hasil studi ini menunjukkan bahwa kedua novel tersebut mengungkapkan bagaimana kelompok etnis Cina mengalami berbagai perlakuan diskriminatif sebagaimana ditunjukkan oleh tokoh-tokoh utamanya. Kedua novel tersebut juga merupakan upaya penulispenulisnya, yang merupakan keturunan Cina, untuk menyuarakan keberadaan etnis Cina di Negara tempat hidup mereka. Hasil studi selanjutnya mengungkapkan bahwa alasan ekonomi dan politik lah yang mendorong diterbitkannya produk hukum yang diskriminatif di Amerika dan di Indonesia. Kedua negara menempatkan etnis Cina pada posisi lemah secara politis. Kelompok yang dominan di kedua Negara memanfaatkan produk hukum untuk mempertahankan posisi mereka meskipun kini etnis Cina sudah diterima sebagai suatu bagian yang tak terpisahkan dari kedua negara.

The study aims to see how the novels by Maxine Hong Kingston, China Men, and Richard Oh, The Pathfinders of Love express the issue of discriminative treatment. It also aims to explore the genesis of the discriminatory legal products of both countries and their social and cultural impacts upon the ethnic Chinese. This study employs the theories of reconciliation of tenses (past, present, future), of reconciliation of academic disciplines and of micro to macro. To reconcile the tenses of both nations compared, the writer uses historical approach. To reconcile academic disciplines, it uses interdisciplinary approach that includes historical approach to study and analyze the parts of history of the nations that are relevant to the emergence of the discriminative legal products concerning the Chinese ethnic, sociological approach to reveal how discrimination takes its particular shape in each country, and literary approach to analyze the literary works in details that the relevant element will be exposed to the issue. The mimetic approach of literature is applied to prove that micro world of literature is the reflection of the macro world of the real world, in this case, the experiences of Sino-Indonesian and Chinese American people. The study found out that both novels expose the kinds of discriminative treatments the Chinese experienced as the main characters show in the story and they share one idea: voicing the Chinese descent people in the countries where they live and belong to. It has further revealed that the issue of discriminative legal products in both America and Indonesia were mainly caused by economic and political reasons. They both posed the Chinese ethnic as subordinate and therefore, they were weak politically. The superiors, the dominating groups in both countries did make use of legal products to maintain their dominance even though eventually they accept the Chinese ethnic as an inseparable part of their nations.
