Sebagai salah satu fakta politik yang turut ambil bagian dalam momentum perubahan adalah keberadaan organisasi NU dan kiai Pesantren. Salah satunya adalah munculnya pergulatan dalam panggung politik telah membawa NU dan kiai dalam perjuanganperjuangan kepentingan untuk memperoleh dan mempertahankan kekuasaan. Secara terbuka pergulatan ini bukan hanya berhubungan dengan kekuasaan pemerintah dan kekuatan politik lain, tetapi secara internal telah membawa pada percaturan perebutan kepentingan antar elit dalam tubuh NU sendiri yang mengimbas pada kehidupan umat (NU). Secara internal telah menimbulkan fraksi yang berorientasi pada perjuangan kepentingan politik dan pihak lain, para Ulama yang berorientasi pada kehidupan umat. Fenomena baru keterlibatan dan masuknya kiai dalam politik merupakan tantangan bagi kiai dan pesantrennya. Karena sikap politik kiai pesantren merupakan bagian dari sikap NU, tidak saja representasi institusi pesantrennya, melainkan menjadi representasi umat para pendukungnya yang fanatik, sehingga sikap politik kiai pesantren diikuti pula oleh sikap politik para pendukungnya. Untuk itu penelitian ini dilakukan untuk perilaku memilih warga NU dalam pemilu presiden 2004. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian studi kasus yang bercorak deskriptif-eksporatif yang bertujuan menggambarkan sifat suatu keadaan tentang perilaku memilih warga NU dalam pemilu presiden 2004 di Tegalrejo Kabuapaten Magelang. Data sekunder, pengamatan lapangan dan wawancara mendalam menjadi dasar dalam melakukan analisis data . Dari hasil penelitian ditemukan bahwa kekuatan kiai memiliki pengaruh dan mampu mempengaruhi perilaku politik masyarakat. Dalam penelitian ini mencoba menjawab apa yang dilakukan peneliti lain di era perubahan saat ini, yang melakukan generalisasi terhadap peran politik kiai semakin di tinggalkan oleh masyarakat. Padahal penelitian tersebut tidak selamanya benar tergantung pada ketokohan kiai, kharisma, strategi berpolitik dan strategi dalam pengelolaan pesantren. Hasil penelitian ini adalah, pertama, secara umum pergeseran pengaruh kiai di masyarakat memang terjadi, khususnya keterlibatan kiai dalam politik, untuk itu perlu konsistensi kiai di dalam ungkapan, perkataan dan perbuatan yang benar-benar mempresentasikan kepentingan umat, bukan kepentingan individu, golongan ataupun partainya. Kedua, perlu membuat langkah-langkah agar peran pesantren mampu menjadi jawaban bagi masyarakat sekitar di dalam mencari solusi persoalan-persoalan yang dihadapi oleh masyarakat. Ketiga, kedekatan pesantren, kiai, santri dan masyarakat perlu dipertahankan. Sehingga menjadi media untuk mempertahankan kesatuan umat. Sehingga terhindar dari konflik-konflik kecil maupun besar. Keempat, perlu mengakomodir dan mengorganisir warga NU agar berjalan bersama di dalam meningkatkan dan mengembangkan kemajuan baik bidang pendidikan, ekonomi, politik, bidaya serta kemasyarakatan, sehingga warga NU tidak terkesan lema

As a political facts that is taking apart in a change momentum, is the existence of NU organization and the Islamic Boarding School’s leader/Kyai. One of them is the emergence of the political wrestling that is carrying NU and its leader in the struggle of interest to get and to sustain its power. Openly this wrestling does not related to the government power and the other political power. But internally it had carrying to taking away arena of the political interest between the elites in the NU’s body which is affected to the community (NU). Internally, it created the fraction-oriented to the political and another’s interest, the community-oriented leaders (ulemas). The phenomena of the involvement and the leaders enter to the in the politic is kinds of challenge for the leaders and their Islamic boarding school. Because the political attitude of these Moslems leaders (Kyai), are apart of the NU’s attitude, not only represent of their Moslem school, but as the representation of the entire fanatic supporting communities. For these, this research was conducted to the choosing behavior of the NU communities in the president election of 2004. The methods used in this study case research, which has a descriptive-explorative aimed to describe a situation nature concerning the choosing behavior of the NU’s communities in the president election in 2004 in Tegalrejo, Magelang Regency. The secondary data, field observation, and a deep interview became a fundamental in conducting the data analyzing. Of the data research was found that the Moslem leaders’ power, who has influences by their charisma, science and their superiorities in the other fields are able to influence the political behavior and being assumed as the society social configuration. In this research, it tried to do a generalization toward the leader’s political role that increasingly being left behind by the society. In fact, the research is not always right, it is depended on the leaders’ figure, charisma, political strategy and the strategy in managing his Islamic school. The recommendation of the research results is, the first, in general, the leaders’ influence sliding in the society is really occurred, particularly the leaders’ involvement in the politic, for this it’s need the leaders’ consistence in their expression, words, and their behave that are really presenting the communities interest, not individual, group or whatever party. The second, it’s needed to make some steps so that the Islamic boarding school (pesantren) is able to find solution of the facing problems by the society. The third, the pesantren closeness, the leaders and society should be sustained. Thus, it is become a media to defend the community’s unity. Hence we avoid away of small or large conflicts. The fourth, it is needed to accommodate and organize the NU community so that they will run together in increasing and developing a good progression in education, economic, politic, culture and society, thus the NU’s community is do not seem so weak.
