Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent malignancies throughout the world. Although many risk factors for the development of breast cancer have been identified, such as the inherited genetic predisposition, the molecular mechanisms related to the breast carcinogenesis remain poorly understood. Recently, studies has been suggesting that some types of virus might be involved in the pathogenesis of breast cancer. It has been done in some countries and shows controversial results regarding the role of HPV infection to the incidence of breast cancer. The aim of this study are (1) to detect the HPV type 18 sequences in breast cancers patients in Yogyakarta, and (2) if there are any correlations between the presence of HPV sequences and stage of tumour, grade of tumour, hormone receptor status, estrogen receptor status, and the amplification limfonodus involvement Her2Neu. Seventy-seven unselected DNA samples extracted from invasive breast carcinoma tissues were analysed. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed to amplify specific sequences for HPV types 18. Chi-square statistic used to analyze the correlation between E6 gene of HPV 18 with clinical characteristic of the patients. Twenty-nine samples (38%) have been identified having E6 gen of HPV 18. There is no significant correlation between age, tumor size, tumor stage, histological type, lymphonodus status, menopausal status, estrogen receptor status, and status of HPV infection HER2/Neu with HPV 18 infection.
