Protocol-level equivalence among Ethereum execution clients has not been matched by a controlled comparative performance profile for Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) transactions, and none of the benchmarking studies reviewed include Nethermind for SSI on a private network. This study compares Go-Ethereum (Geth), Hyperledger Besu, and Nethermind on a controlled Proof of Authority (Clique) network with Hyperledger Caliper as a workload generator that offers transaction loads of 20, 50, 100, and 250 TPS through a 3 × 4 factorial design using randomized complete block design (RCBD) with ten replications, analyzed with ART ANOVA, ART-C contrasts, and Cliff's delta. Offered load was the dominant factor (partial eta² = 0.812 for throughput and 0.866 for weighted average latency), whereas client type had a significant but smaller effect (0.376 and 0.175) with no evidence of interaction (p = 0.710 and 0.550). Averaged across loads, Besu's throughput exceeded Geth's and Nethermind's by 1.7% and 5.6%, respectively (Cliff's delta = +0.35 and +0.85), and Geth's exceeded Nethermind's by 3.8% (Cliff's delta = +0.75); all were significant after Holm correction. In weighted average latency, Nethermind was 21.7% and 12.8% slower than Besu and Geth, respectively (|Cliff's delta| >= 0.55), whereas Geth's 7.9% gap to Besu was not significant (p Holm = 0.080). At 20 TPS, median latency was 7.77 s for Nethermind, 3.24 s for Besu, and 3.90 s for Geth, a gap on the order of one Clique block period (5 s). At the 100 and 250 TPS targets, a single Caliper worker held the actual send rate near 77 TPS, and throughput plateaued at 38.47–41.32 TPS, about 4–10?low the 42.9 TPS protocol model limit, with a 100% transaction success rate. RPC-node CPU utilization at both targets was 0.34% ± 0.12% (normalized to 16 logical cores), so the RPC node was not a computational bottleneck. In diagnostic telemetry without resource quotas, Geth's RPC-node container memory footprint (138.12 MB) was 85.0% and 81.7% smaller than that of Besu (922.62 MB) and Nethermind (754.55 MB), respectively, but was not identified as a determinant of throughput or latency. In the tested configuration, throughput saturation therefore aligns more closely with the protocol limit than with client runtime differences, and that limit can be estimated from per-operation gas cost, block gas limit, and block period. Client selection does not raise the limit but affects confirmation latency; Nethermind's higher latency floor makes it less suitable for SSI systems on PoA-Clique that require fast confirmation.
