Karakterisasi adsorben dilakukan menggunakan instrumen Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope–Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX).

Research on the utilization of KOH-activated coal bottom ash as an adsorbent for tetracycline was conducted. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the activation process on coal bottom ash by comparing it with unactivated coal bottom ash, determine the optimum conditions for tetracycline adsorption using both adsorbents, and study the adsorption kinetics and isotherms of tetracycline. The study was initiated with a preparation process to obtain coal bottom ash (AD), which was subsequently activated using KOH to obtain activated coal bottom ash (ADT). The adsorbents were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). Tetracycline adsorption was investigated based on the effects of the solution pH, adsorbent mass, contact time, and initial adsorbate concentration. The tetracycline concentration in the solution was determined using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer.

The results showed that the activation process altered the characteristics of coal bottom ash, as indicated by FT-IR, XRD, and SEM-EDX characterization. FT-IR characterization showed shifts in the Si-O bands from 1087 to 1080 cm-1 and from 478 to 455 cm-1, as well as the disappearance of the band at 779 cm-1 after activation. XRD characterization identified quartz (SiO2) at approximately 20.860; 26.640; and 50.139°, albite (NaAlSi3O8) at 24.201° and 27.954°, and hematite (Fe2O3) at 33.115° and 35.612°, with slight shifts after activation. SEM-EDX characterization showed changes in surface morphology and elemental composition, indicated by increases in O and Al, decreases in Si, Ca, Mg, and Fe, and the appearance of K. The optimum conditions for tetracycline adsorption were a pH of 3, adsorbent masses of 0.10 g for AD and 0.20 g for ADT, contact times of 150 min for AD and 120 min for ADT, and an initial tetracycline concentration of 80 mg L-1. Tetracycline adsorption onto AD and ADT followed the pseudo second order kinetic model, with rate constant of 0.1446 and 0.3334 g mg-1 min-1, respectively, and the Langmuir isotherm model with maximum adsorption capacities of 3.5971 and 6.4851 mg g-1,respectively. KOH activation increased the adsorption capacity of coal bottom ash.
