Political debate on Indonesian social media in the aftermath of the 2024 presidential election is frequently marked by expressions that are as hostile as they are voluminous, which raises the question of whether such intensity actually sustains the quality of democratic discussion. This study examines how expressions of online civility and incivility in a TikTok comment section reflect discursive variety and the quality of democratic discussion within digital politics. It adopts a qualitative approach using Norman Fairclough's three-dimensional critical discourse analysis, comprising textual description, interpretation of discursive practice, and explanation of social practice. The data consist of 206 user comments drawn from fourteen posts on the @aniesbaswedan account between January and March 2026, selected purposively and classified through the incivility typology of Bentivegna and Rega (2024). The findings show that the dominant results are forms of discursive incivility such as mockery and labelling as its most prominent form, reinforced by paralinguistic and visual elements that culminate in dehumanisation at its most extreme. These expressions are reproduced through templates (copy-paste) that circulate across posts and are amplified by a platform algorithm treating engagement as the measure of visibility. Even so, the comment with the highest resonance takes the form of civil criticism, indicating that visibility is governed by resonance rather than by the aggressiveness of an expression. The comment space resembles a performative stage more than a deliberative forum, since most comments standalone without reciprocity. The study concludes that digital political debate tends to erode democratic quality through identity affirmation and the delegitimation of actors, although this finding should be read proportionally.
