Interior design of type-36 housing is generally developed without a systematic evaluation of prospective occupants' affective preferences and neurophysiological responses. This study aims to identify the kansei words representing impressions of a house, determine interior design criteria based on affective preferences, analyze neurophysiological responses to design variations, and compare the results of the two approaches.

The study employed virtual reality (VR) as the medium for presenting stimuli, Kansei Engineering to measure affective responses, and electroencephalography (EEG) to record neurophysiological responses. Kansei words were collected from prospective homebuyers and reduced through factor analysis to obtain representative words. A total of 24 participants evaluated design combinations derived from variations in kitchen layout, floor pattern, and wall pattern, with each participant assessing 12 of the 24 total combinations according to their layout group. Affective responses were measured using the semantic differential and analyzed with Quantification Theory Type I (QT I), while neurophysiological responses were analyzed based on theta, alpha, beta, and gamma wave activity.

The study yielded two Kansei words, namely Impian (Dream) and Terawat (Well-maintained). For the Impian impression, a partitioned kitchen layout and wallpaper walls were the significant contributing elements, with kitchen layout as the most dominant, whereas floor pattern had no significant effect. For the Terawat impression, none of the three design elements had a significant effect, suggesting that this impression is not determined by the varied attributes. The EEG analysis showed that wall pattern significantly affected theta and gamma activity, while kitchen layout and floor pattern did not. Wall pattern was the most consistent element across both approaches, kitchen layout influenced only the affective evaluation, and floor pattern affected neither. The comparison of the affective and neurophysiological approaches revealed both convergence and divergence in responses that could not be uncovered through a single approach alone.
