Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is a strategic national commodity serving as a primary source of sugar and bioenergy production, making a significant contribution to Indonesia's food security and economy. However, this crop is notably susceptible to waterlogging stress caused by climate change, particularly during the germination phase. This study aimed to evaluate the waterlogging tolerance of eight sugarcane genotypes from PT Gunung Madu Plantations during the bud chip germination phase. The experiment was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with two soil moisture treatments: control (20-25%) and waterlogged (30-45%). The results indicated that waterlogging stress significantly reduced plant height, leaf width, germination rate, vigor index, and leaf chlorophyll content. Conversely, as a morphological adaptation mechanism, there was an increase in root length and root volume, alongside the widening of stomatal openings under waterlogged conditions. Leaf number and stomatal density proved to be stable traits and were not significantly affected by waterlogging. Tolerance responses varied widely among the genotypes tested. In conclusion, genotypes VGM0007, VGM0201, and VGM0601 were identified as the most tolerant to waterlogging stress during the early growth phase, whereas genotype VGM1002 was the most sensitive. Genotype VGM0907 exhibited mixed responses, showing good vegetative tolerance but high sensitivity during germination. The tolerant genotypes are highly recommended as priority genetic materials for developing sugarcane varieties suited for poorly drained or flood-prone areas.
