This study aims to understand how the digital communication practices of UGM Faculty of Social and Political Sciences students regarding the ‘Peringatan Darurat’ issue, using the hashtag #KawalPutusanMK on the social media platform X can foster collective solidarity. The author also seeks to examine how digital solidarity can foster collective participation in the public sphere. This study employs a qualitative approach analyzed through a phenomenological methodology. Research data were collected through in-depth interviews with six Fisipol UGM students from various departments who were involved in the dynamics of the ‘Peringatan Darurat’ movement. The analysis was conducted using Manuel Castells’ theory of Networked Social Movements and Bennett & Segerberg’s theory of Connective Action. The results of the study indicate that the social media platform X is characterized by open access to information, the rapid circulation of political information, freedom of expression, and user segmentation that facilitates horizontal communication networks among students. Digital communication practices through visuals, narratives, and the hashtag #KawalPutusanMK fosters a shared sense of concern, collective identity, and organic solidarity that is independent of formal organizational structures. This study also reveals that the transformation from personal awareness to collective participation does not occur automatically as a result of social media use, but rather through a lengthy process of subjective meaning-making influenced by experience, social interaction, and the existence of coordination networks outside the digital sphere. Thus, social media platform X functions not only as a space for the dissemination of political information but also as an arena for the construction of shared meaning that fosters collective participation in contemporary social movements.
