The need for comprehensive information on changes in vegetation cover and its contribution to the surrounding environmental conditions in Wanagama from 1999 to 2025 is a key aspect that requires further study. Several studies have examined the contribution of vegetation cover to soil conditions, biomass, and ecotourism. Research examining the contribution of vegetation cover in the KHDTK Wanagama I to local temperature reduction remains limited; therefore, this study was conducted to analyze changes in vegetation cover and its contribution to local temperature reduction from 1999 to 2025 in the KHDTK Wanagama I.
The study utilized Landsat TM, ETM+, and OLI imagery acquired over a 6-year period. Vegetation cover was analyzed using NDVI, which was classified into five density classes, while LST was derived from the thermal band. The analysis was conducted using two approaches: an analysis of changes in vegetation cover and a spatial analysis of the relationship between NDVI and LST. The relationship between the two was analyzed using Spearman’s correlation, and the changes were mapped spatially.
The results show an increase in the high-density class from 0.97 ha in 1999 to 565.79 ha in 2025. The average LST decreased from 36.58 °C in 1999 to 26.84 °C in 2025, a drop of approximately 9.7 °C. NDVI and LST consistently showed a negative correlation over the 6-year observation period, with correlation values ranging from (r = [?0.730], p < 0 xss=removed>
