This study aims to understand the forms of politainment communication employed in the 2024 presidential election campaign and to analyse the construction of politainment that reflects psychopolitical power. The phenomenon of politainment utilised by the candidate pairs in the 2024 presidential election campaign is examined in greater depth to uncover the underlying philosophy.
This study employs a literature review method based on current issues in the 2024 presidential election campaign, utilising Byung-Chul Han’s psychopolitical theoretical framework. The research material is analysed using qualitative descriptive analysis, which serves to explore the philosophical foundations of the issues presented within this philosophical framework.
The research findings show, firstly, that politainment communication in the 2024 presidential election campaign took six forms: personalisation, emotionalisation, dramatisation, visualisation, celebrity culture and glorification, which served to attract attention and subtly manipulate voters’ emotions without them realising it. Secondly, politainment is constructed by digital social media platforms, which have placed control of political communication in the hands of influencers and celebrities, whilst the creation of visual content also shapes the way the public makes their choices. The tendency amongst young voters to view politics as serious, rigid and boring means that candidate pairs need to package their campaigns in a creative and entertaining manner. Thus, politainment is not merely a political communication strategy, but part of a new face of power operating through social media, which will lead to the realisation of spectator democracy.
