The present study was conducted to enhance the visible-light photocatalytic activity of TiO2 through copper (Cu) doping, utilizing waste cables as the metal source. The research encompasses the doping of TiO2 with Cu ions extracted from waste cables, followed by the characterization and evaluation of the catalyst's performance under visible irradiation. The Cu doping process was carried out via a hydrothermal method at 200 °C for 6 hours, with varying dopant concentrations of 0.10 %mol; 0.25 %mol; and 0.50 %mol. The prepared TiO2-Cu photocatalysts were characterized using Diffuse Reflectance UV-Visible (DR UV-Vis) spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy Dispersive X-Ray (SEM-EDX). The photocatalytic activity of the TiO2-Cu was evaluated through the photodegradation of phthalic acid under visible light, incorporating the optimization of irradiation time and catalyst mass.

The results demonstrated that doping TiO2 with Cu extracted from waste cables successfully narrowed its band gap energy (Eg), shifting its optical absorption into the visible light region. The most significant band gap reduction was achieved with a 0.25 mol% Cu dopant concentration (TiO2-Cu 0.25%), narrowing the band gap from 3.20 eV (undoped TiO2) to 2.86 eV. Consequently, the Cu-doped TiO2 showed an enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity in the degradation of phthalic acid compared to the undoped TiO2. The highest photodegradation efficiency was achieved with 40 mg of the TiO2-Cu 0.25% photocatalyst in 40 mL of a 10 mg/L phthalic acid solution, irradiated for 120 minutes under visible light.
