Vegetation can improve soil stability through the mechanical contribution of root systems, which mobilize tensile resistance as the soil undergoes shear deformation. The magnitude of this contribution is influenced by root characteristics, the Root Area Ratio (RAR), and the normal stress acting on the shear plane. This study aims to evaluate the effect of vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides) roots on soil shear strength under various RAR and normal stress conditions, and to compare the root shear strength contribution obtained from direct shear tests with the predictions of the Root Bundle Model with Weibull Survival Function (RBMw).
The study was conducted using silica sand as the soil medium under remoulded and oven-dry conditions. Direct shear tests were performed at five RAR values of 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8%, and 1.0%, under normal stresses of 25, 50, and 75 kPa, with horizontal displacement measured up to 10 mm. The empirical root shear strength contribution (??emp) was determined as the difference between the shear stress of rooted and unrooted sand at the same normal stress and displacement. Root mechanical and morphological properties obtained from tensile tests and root measurements were used as input parameters for the RBMw calculations.
The results show that increasing RAR did not always lead to a monotonic increase in root shear strength contribution, and the response was influenced by normal stress. At a normal stress of 25 kPa, the highest ??emp was obtained at an RAR of 1.0%, with a value of 33.38 kPa, whereas at normal stresses of 50 and 75 kPa, the highest contributions were obtained at an RAR of 0.8%, with values of 58.38 kPa and 46.02 kPa, respectively. Increasing the RAR to 1.0% at these two normal stresses reduced the contribution to 29.82 kPa and 11.09 kPa, indicating possible root–root interaction and overlapping zones of influence at high root density. Comparison with RBMw showed that the model produced higher root shear strength contributions than the empirical results for all test combinations, with an average overestimation of 165.68%, ranging from 23.12% at an RAR of 0.6% and a normal stress of 50 kPa to 621.90% at an RAR of 1.0% and a normal stress of 75 kPa. RBMw was able to qualitatively represent the increasing trend of root contribution with increasing RAR over part of the tested range, but it did not account for the effects of normal stress, root interaction, or the reduction in contribution observed at high RAR.
